Menurut saudara Kris, mereka mendengar teriakan "hidup atau mati tidak kira" dan sebuah motosikal yang berada di luar memecut laju setelah semua mereka keluar apabila terbau benda terbakar.kesan kebakaran juga masih kelihatan .

Buat masa kini pihak polis masih lagi berada di kawasan yayasan Aman untuk "menghalau"pengayuh dari berda lebih lama.....

Kempen basikal 'raykat pengayuh perubahan' dilancarkan

Menteri Besar Selangor Khalid Ibrahim telah menyatakan sokongan penuh dan melancarkan kempen basikal Jerit "Rakyat pengayuh perubahan' pada 29 November 2008 di perkarangan Stadium Melawati.


Program telah bermula dengan lagu "Power to People" memang tepat dengan program pelancaran. Kebanyakan orang yang hadir, memakai T-shirt Jerit merah memberi identiti tersendiri kepada majlis ini. Pengerusi Majlis memulakan program dengan sedikit pengenalan mengenai Jerit. Ucapan pertama adalah oleh Saudari Kohila, Penyelaras Jerit. Dalam ucapan beliau telah mengatakan bahawa Kempen Basikal ini diadakan untuk membawa mesej kesedaran kepada rakyat bahawa hanya mereka sahaja yang boleh membawa perubahan tulen dalam negara. Beliau juga telah menyeru semua orang untuk memberi sokongan kepada delegasi basikal apabila mereka sampai dikawasan-kawasan mereka dan seterusnya turun pada 18 Disember 2008 untuk hantar memorandum ke Parlimen. Setelah ucapan beliau, satu team delegasi basikal telah mengayuh masuk di hadapan pentas.





Dan wakil-wakil dari rakyat telah memberi enam tuntutan Jerit kepada Menteri Besar yang mangantungnya atas setiap basikal. Setelah itu Menteri Besar Khalid telah memberi ucapan pelancaran beliau. Khalid telah mengatakan bahwa beliau megah dalam melancarkan program Kempen Basikal ini. Beliau juga telah menyatakan bahawa adalah perlu gerakan seperti Jerit untuk mengingatkan tanggungjawab Kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat.





Tambah Khalid Ibrahim, tuntutan Jerit adalah selaras dengan inisiatif Kerajaan Negeri Selangor untuk merakyatkan ekonomi negeri Selangor dan memberi sokongan penuh kepada kempen Jerit. Setelah ucapan pelancaran, beliau telah memotong belon yang dan seterusnya melancarkan Kempen Basikal Jerit.Setelah itu slogan "Hidup Rakyat! Hidup Perjuangan!" dilaungkan dan majlis diakhiri dengan pemberian cenderahati kepada Khalid dan Exco Negeri Selangor Dr Xavier yang telah membantu Jerit dalam mengadakan pelancaran ini. Kempen Basikal Jerit Rakyat Pengayuh Perubahan adalah satu inisiatif Jaringan Rakyat Tertindas (Jerit) yang akan berbasikal ke seluruh negara melalui pekan-pekan dan bandar-bandar utama dengan membawa mesej kesedaran tentang isu-isu semasa yang memberi tekanan kepada kehidupan rakyat.







Antaranya adalah isu kenaikan harga minyak, penggunaan akta zalim seperti ISA ke atas rakyat, isu global seperti alam sekitar dan krisis makanan yang dihadapi oleh kebanyakan negara di dunia.Kempen Basikal ini akan bermula di dua lokasi utama dari Utara dan Selatan pada 3 Disember 2008 dan akan sampai ke perkarangan Parlimen Kuala Lumpur pada 18 Disember dimana memorandum dijangka dihantar kepada Perdana Menteri dan Ketua Pembangkang Anwar Ibrahim.





Sepanjang jalan para peserta akan mengedarkan risalah kesedaran dan juga menghantar memorandum kepada Menteri Besar atau Ketua Menteri negeri yang disinggahnya. Semua Menteri Besar dan Ketua Menteri telah dimaklumkan. Kempen Basikal "Rakyat Pengayuh Perubahan" akan membawa isu dan masalah rakyat yang sebenar kepada platform nasional. Kami menyeru rakyat biasa untuk menyertai dan menyahut panggilan kami untuk bersama-sama menjayakan kempen ini. 16 Jerit cyclists arrested in Malaysia

Dec 6, 2008 The 'Ride for change' campaign has hit another snag. This morning, 16 activists about to take part in the cycling campaign were arrested at Suaram's office in Skudai and released after about an hour of questioning.

According to the campaign's southern region co-ordinator Nyam Kee Han, who was also arrested, some of the cyclists were arrested at 8.30am when around 50 police officers put up a total of eight roadblocks around the office area. "The first 12 people were arrested at 8.30am, when they were trying to negotiate with the police in front of our office gate so we all could proceed with our plan. "But as they were trying to negotiate, the police decided to arrest them instead.

The remaining four, including myself, who were in the office, were arrested at 9.15am," said Nyam, who was at the Skudai police station when contacted. According to Nalini, who is also Suaram co-ordinator, the police arrested the group for illegal assembly. "But I argued that it was not an illegal assembly as we were all just trying to cycle. But the police said that they received specific instructions to arrest us," said Nalini.

The campaign is Jerit's attempt to raise awareness of the current issues plaguing the country like food shortage, environmental problems, draconian laws and the current financial crisis. The group is scheduled to hand over a memorandum to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim at the end of their campaign.

Jerit co-ordinator Y Kohila explained at the launch of the event last week that the campaign was inspired by estate workers in Bukit Asahan, Melaka, who marched 150km to Kuala Lumpur in the 1970s to meet the then prime minister to resolve their problems. "We were not allowed to go out and the police started disturbing our bicycles, sitting on them and pushing them, and that's when we got angry," said Kohila, adding that the police accused activists of being unco-operative. "But the bicycles are our property and they have no right to do so.

Then they started asking the participants, especially the students, questions just to intimidate us," she added. Prior to that, she claimed that officers threatened to break down the office gate. "But we opened it ourselves when they gave us that warning," said Kohila. She also said the arrests this morning had thwarted their plans. "The police told us not to cycle in Skudai. They said even if one person cycles in Skudai, he or she would be arrested," she said. When asked about Jerit's next step, she replied, "We will decide once we go to Kulai to have our lunch but we'll let you know if we get arrested there." When contacted by Malaysiakini this afternoon, Nalini said the whole team was still in Kulai.

"The police are still following our bus to all the places we are going to. They are intimidating us by taking pictures and preventing us from moving." At around 4.30pm, 13 activists started cycling from Kulai to Simpang Renggam. However, according to Nalini, police stopped the Jerit activists and took them to the Kulai police station, where they were issued traffic summonses for not having reflectors on their bicycles. As of 7pm, cyclist were still on the way to Simpang Renggam.

Anwar Ibrahim: RI, Malaysia, Thailand able to overcome poverty

DEPOK, Dec. 6 — Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand which are rich in natural resources should be able to overcome poverty if they improve supervision and strengthen cooperation and coordination among themselves, former Malaysian deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim said.
If they could recover just 10 percent of the US billion in financial losses they suffered every year by illegal logging, they would have enough to overcome poverty, Anwar said after giving a general lecture at the campus of the University of Indonesia in Depok, West Java, on Friday.
Therefore, the governments should continue building a strong and serious commitment to eradicate poverty, he said.

The global crisis currently gripping the world could be a starting point for the three governments to do something better in the future, he said.

According to Ibrahim, the world was currently facing a worse economic crisis than in 1998 as its impact would affect the world economy over the next two years.

"Therefore, the countries in the Southeast Asian region should deal with this problem by taking into account its long term impact on their economies," he said.

The governments should be able to adopt appropriate policies to face the crisis. "This economic crisis is more severe than the one in 1997-98 as its impact is affecting not only the financial system but also the economic system," he said.

In addition, the governments needed as soon as possible to build up their countries` economic strength on the basis of existing capabilities by withdrawing all the funds they had invested in foreign countries like Saudi Arabia and others.

The governments, he further said, should take into account the factor of competitiveness by focussing on the training of micro credit businesses. There should be balance in meeting the credit needs of conglomerates and of small people.

"Don`t give greater attention to business tycoons. Small businessmen should be equally treated to enable them to become strong. The more so, because the people feel ignored following the emergence of unstable political conditions," he said.

There was also a need to empower the people based on the existing economic, political, scientific and cultural capabilities. (PNA/Antara)

Good news! Bicycles freed… but no “perarakan” allowed

You will be pleased to hear that the Jerit bicycles, yes bicycles, have been released. I guess they were innocent after all, poor bikes - and it’s all systems go for tomorrow.
So with that, the cyclists are expected to hand in a memorandum to Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng tomorrow at around 12.30pm in Komtar.

Sungai Siput MP Jeyakumar Devaraj spent most of this afternoon negotiating with senior police officers in Penang. “I told them, come on-lah, there are so many criminals around for you to deal with; just let our cyclists do their thing and they won’t cause any problem,” he said over the phone.

“If you want, you can send police to help us with the traffic, though even that won’t be necessary as we have our own marshals.”

Top police officers in the state finally relented and gave the green light. Apparently, there’s one caveat though: the cyclists are not allow to go on a perarakan (procession).

Singapore hopes for smooth leadership transition in Malaysia

SINGAPORE (Dec 5, 2008): Singapore hopes there will be a smooth transition of leadership in Malaysia when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi steps down next March.
"I hope for a smooth transition and for political stability," Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said of Malaysia to foreign journalists during a luncheon dialogue here today.

Lee said Malaysia had gone through a number of major political developments in recent months and he hoped the power transition in Malaysia would go well.

Abdullah is expected to pass the premiership baton to his deputy, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, under an agreement reached within their Umno political party
although the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, of which Umno is a component member, won the general election early this year.

Lee said he also hoped that Singapore and Malaysia would continue to work together and improve their relations under Najib.

The dialogue, organised by the Foreign Correspondents Association of Singapore (FCA), was attended by over 100 foreign journalists based in the city-state.
When asked whether the Iskandar Malaysia development in Johor was a threat or an opportunity to Singapore, Lee said "it is a challenge to us."

Lee said that obviously Iskandar Malaysia would like to rival or outdo Singapore but the island republic would be much comfortable working with it "because we feel that Singapore and Johor, together we can be one big centre of vitality and growth and eventually create one critical mass and gain a wider range of opportunities and position ourselves for investors to come in."
The prime minister said foreign investors could take advantage of what both Singapore and Johor had to offer.

Lee said there would be more growth to go around and he added that the competition between the two neighbours "is not Singapore versus Johor, but Singapore versus Shenzhen or Singapore versus Shanghai or Singapore versus Mumbai".

But he added that there was always more competition and cooperation in the national economy.
Lee also touched on the development of the Asean Summit which was postponed by Thailand, the host for this year's meeting, to March next year due to the political crisis in Bangkok.
The prime minister said the postponement was a setback to Asean because Asean's cooperation was vital to all its members.

He said this cooperation had to press on regardless of the political developments in any member countries and it should not be held back by any member just because it was preoccupied by domestic matters.

However, Lee said, the substance of the Asean Summit would proceed because the Asean foreign ministers would continue to meet and bring the Asean Charter to effect.
He added that the Asean trade ministers were also arranging to meet and their agendas included meeting with their dialogue partners to put the final touches to the free trade agreements which had been concluded and needed to be decided upon and brought to effect quickly.

Lee reiterated that the summit could not be postponed for too long because with the current global financial environment affecting all the Asean countries, its leaders needed to meet their dialogue partners to exchange views and compare notes and send a clear signal to the world that "Asean is still in business".

He said that was why Singapore had suggested that the summit be held in January rather than later in March, and if there was a necessity, the summit could be held in Jakarta, the headquarters of the Asean secretariat, with the Thais still the host.

KUALA LUMPUR Malaysia Vote Key Test For Govt And Opposition

A January by-election will provide a key test for Malaysia's incoming prime minister as he seeks to avert a sharp economic slowdown, while a win for the opposition could reignite Anwar Ibrahim's stuttering campaign.

The election commission on Friday set the date of the vote, caused by the death of a government MP, for Jan. 17.

It will be the first vote since the collapse of Anwar's bid to take power on Sept. 16 when he failed to win over the support of 30 government legislators needed to form a new administration.
Anwar, a former deputy prime minister, seemed to be on the verge then of ousting the government that has ruled Malaysia for 51 years after the opposition scored its best result in elections in March and Anwar returned to parliament in August with a landslide win.

The main government party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), accelerated a handover from lacklustre Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to his deputy, Najib Razak.
"If UMNO wins, it will be seen as a victory for Najib personally, but if the opposition wins, it can only be seen as PAS getting stronger since the March general election," said James Chin, professor of political science at Monash University.

Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS), the Islamic party popular with Malay Muslims in Anwar's three party alliance, will contest Kuala Terengganu which is located deep in the Malay heartland.
The constituency is almost 90 percent Malay, the race traditionally represented by UMNO, compared with 60 percent nationally.

The government majority in the constituency in elections held in March this year when there was a massive swing to the opposition was just 628 votes.
"The poll will be seen as a bellwether of the Malay heartland vote," the Singapore-based Straits Times said on Friday.

However, in terms of altering the balance of power in parliament where the government currently has a 55-seat majority of 221 sitting MPs, the vote will not have a massive impact.
TESTING ECONOMIC TIMES

The global economic recession is starting to bite in Malaysia and the government is forecasting economic growth will be 3.5 percent in 2009, the lowest in eight years.

Since UMNO agreed the handover of power, it is Najib who also became finance minister who has made policy and has taken charge of steering Malaysia through the gathering global economic storm.

"This contest will be a bellwether of Najib's ability to galvanise the troops on the ground and convince voters that he is the future of the country," said the influential Malaysian Insider website.

BackgroundJERIT or Oppressed People’s Movement is organizing a cycling campaign throughout the nation to put forward six demands to the Prime Minister of Malaysia. The campaign officially began yesterday at Wisma Darul Aman Kedah. 50 cyclists have been flagged off from Wisma Darul Aman and they would cycle for sixteen days through Kedah, Penang, Perak, and Selangor. On 18th December they will handover a memorandum to the Prime Minister in Parliament.

We are writing to you, once again, to express our outrage and our strongest condemnation over your government’s ongoing crackdown on freedom of expression.

We are appalled by your government and the police’s latest actions and view this as yet another attempt by your government to intimidate Malaysian citizens from participating in any form of public assembly and exercising their freedom to express their views.

We demand that Ruben s/o Loganathan should be released immediately and unconditionally. We further demand that your government stops the assault on freedom of expression.

We strongly urge you, once again, to stop bringing shame to Malaysia, a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council. We would like to remind you that freedom of expression is guaranteed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.
