2,000 play 'cat and mouse' with cops

Malaysiakini Team Jun 13, 08 11:57am

About 2,000 people marched from Kampung Baru mosque after Friday prayers to the iconic Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur to protest against last week's sharp rise in petrol prices.
MCPX
However, the police have blocked Jalan Raja Abdullah - the main road leading to the destination - Kuala Lumpur City Centre - about 3km away.
Faced with the roadblocks, marchers used alternative roads instead, many of whom headed north in a circuitous route to KLCC.
Onlookers and bystanders at that point were caught by the loudness of the crowd who kept chanting "turun turun Abdullah!" incessantly along Jalan Raja Alang and towards Chow Kit.At 2.22pm, many of them were in Chow Kit area, north of the city, with the traffic police seen helping to control the traffic which was in a standstill as the crowd flooded the route.
The marchers, led by PAS Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub, then headed south along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman towards Jalan Sultan Ismail. However, in the effort to avoid an ugly confrontation with the police who have formed a tight cordon around KLCC, the crowd marched further south to the Sogo Department store.
And at Sogo, the crowd of about 2,000 people decided to conduct an impromptu sit-in in the middle of the busy Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, forcing traffic to a standstill."We want to show how unhappy the Malaysian public are with the oil price rise," said Salahuddin Ayub, PAS youth chief and rally organiser.
"The government has forced us to the streets to demand a reversal of this disastrous policy. This is more than a wake-up call for the PM," he said.
"This is a message to the government. If they don't act, we will have one million people turn up on July 5 to demand action."
The crowd responded: "Overthrow the policy!"
"We must support the people's rights to demand more help from the government because we are suffering from this price rise," said Siti Anisah, a 45-year-old clerk wearing a blue headscarf.
"I think there will be more protests because we definitely don't want to pay so much more. How do I feed my children?" she said.
PAS vice-president Mohd Sabu also spoke to the crowd, telling them of the extravagant expenses undertaken by those in power."I now have to pay RM7 for just rice and vegetables and while the people are suffering, while the wife of the deputy minister (Najib Abdul Razak) spent a few hundred thousand pounds in England."
Following that, about 1,000 continued their march towards the PAS headquarters located about one kilometre away in Jalan Raja Laut.
The crowd then dispersed peacefully upon reaching the PAS building, after once again hearing a short reminder from Salahuddin for the crowd to participate in the July 5 mass rally.
The rally started at about 2pm and ended by 3.15pm.Unlike previous rallies, not a single tear-gas canister was fired and not a drop of acid-laced water was used against the protestors.
PAS leader Dr Dzulkifli Ahmad said that the march was a success although the police had blocked their route to the KLCC.
We were still able to express our dissatisfaction," he told Malaysiakini.
Dangi Wangi OCPD ACP Zulkarnain Abd Rahman, when contacted, said that no arrests were made so far and that the situation has been under control.
Heavy police presence
Earlier at the Friday afternoon prayers, the mosque was packed with people - numbering some 3,000, while about 500 others prayed outside.
About 1pm, PAS leaders Salahuddin, Dzulkilfi, Syed Azman Syed Nawawi and Nasaruddin Tantawi arrived at the mosque.
Just before the prayers, a mosque official urged people not to gather in the mosque compound to take part in the rally.
Earlier this morning, hundred of Federal Reserve Unit members were stationed at the Kampung Baru mosque and its surrounding areas.
Also in the vicinity was a water cannon truck and four FRU trucks.Several roads leading to Kampung Baru and other roads in the city were also blocked by the police.
Meanwhile in KLCC, dozens of police officers were seen at the entrance. One water cannon and seven FRU trucks were stationed behind KLCC at the park, along with a fire brigade truck.
The rally today, one of many that is to be held in the coming weeks, is to oppose last the whopping 41 percent fuel price hike, which raised petrol prices at the pump to RM2.70 per litre

TIADA PENDAKWAAN UNTUK MAHATHIR......MACAM BIASA JUGA..AKHIRNYA RAKYAT LUPA

Abdullah Badawi doesn’t see the need for a royal commission on the judiciary in the light of Justice Ian Chin’s revelations of Mahathir’s threats to remove judges. Such a commission is badly needed to comprehensively investigate the 1988 judicial crisis and the undermining of judicial independence and integrity since then.

From The Star today:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said this was because the Government had decided to reform the judiciary.

“Tak habis-habis dengan cerita ini (The matter seems to be dragging on). I don’t see a reason for another commission. We are going to implement the reforms,” he told reporters at his office yesterday.

The Prime Minister should know that this “cerita” is not going to “habis” anytime soon if we don’t get to the bottom of the judicial rot and institute far-reaching reforms.

A retired health inspector, Andrew Noel Thangam, who spent a large part of his working life in Abdullah’s home town of Kepala Batas, had this to say:

Mr Prime Minister, the high hopes I had for you have been shattered and destroyed by your refusal to have a royal commission on the judiciary. Are you in the same boat as Mahathir for you not to want such a commission?

FROM BORNEO POST

High Court judge makes explosive judicial disclosures

By Danny Wong [See full text of Chin's speech in court - PDF file].

SIBU: A High Court judge here yesterday made some startling revelations at the commencement of the proceedings of the election petition filed by the DAP candidate for the Sarikei parliamentary seat, Wong Hus She, to declare the result of the March 8 general election for the seat void.
The Barisan Nasional candidate, Ding Kuong Hing, won the seat with a slim majority of 51 votes.
Justice Datuk H C Ian Chin informed the parties in open court that he had certain disclosures to make at the start of the proceedings, saying he was doing so to forestall any complaints that might be made by the parties later.
He said complaints had been made against him in an earlier case that he had failed to disclose the detention of his father and brother during the time of the Mustapha regime in Sabah in late 1969 and the early 1970.
Chin then proceeded to make his disclosure the contents of which could only be described as explosive, coming hot on the heels of the findings of the Royal Commission in the Lingam video tape.
He started by saying that “it is better to err on caution that I take this step to shortly disclose what the parties and counsel may not be aware but which they may later complain that I should have disclosed”.
“I take this course also because I am smarting over the complaint that the detention of my father and brother during the time of the Mustapha regime in Sabah in late 1969 and the early 1970 should have been but not disclosed. (See Sabah Foundation & 2 Ors vs Datuk Syed Kechik & Anor, Kota Kinabalu High Court at http://kkhighcourt.com/Completed Civil Matters/SabahFoundation.doc)
“What I am going to disclose relate to what happened after two of my judgements were handed down. One was the judgment in a libel case which I handed down on February 5 1997 (see Raveychandran v Lai Su Chon & Ors at http://kkhighcourt.com/Completed Civil Trials/RaveychandranNST.pdf) by which I distinguished MGG Pillai V Tan Sri Dato Vincent Tan Chee Yioun & Other Appeals (1995) 2 MLJ 493 and refused to give what I consider to be astronomical award for damage to reputation in libel cases,” he said.
Chin said the other was the judgement handed down on Feb 13 1997 in respect of an election petition (Donald Lawan v Abang Wahed bin Abang & Ors [Sri Aman High Court]) by which he set aside the election of Mong Dagang.
“Shortly after those two judgements, the Judges Conference was held from April 24 1997.
The then prime minister was scheduled to have a dialogue with the judges on that date. What was termed a dialogue and later reported as one was anything but a dialogue.
“The then prime minister went there to issue a thinly veiled threat to remove judges by referring to the tribunal that was set up before and stating that though it may be difficult to do so, it was still done. He said all that after he had expressed his unhappiness with what he termed ‘the Borneo Case’ and after he had asked whether the judge who decided that case was present or not.”
Chin said no one had any doubt that he was referring to the election case though he (then prime minister) did not mention it specifically which he decided on Feb 13, 1997.
Added the High Court judge: “After he was done with issuing that threat, he then proceeded to express his view that people should pay heavily for libel.
“He managed to get a single response from a Court of Appeal judge who asked whether he would be happy with a sum of RM1 million as damages for libel.
“He approved of it and he later on made known his satisfaction by promoting this judge (since deceased) to the Federal Court over many others who were senior to him when a vacancy arose.
“I was devastated after hearing all that but help came immediately after the “dialogue” was over when Federal Court judges came to my side and asked me to ignore him. Equally comforting were the words of my brother High Court judge who later told me that the then Prime Minister was too much.
“It will be recalled that the then prime minister not long after he assumed office had said, in a much publicised campaign against corruption, that he will put the fear of God in man but this apparently, given his diatribe in that conference, changed to instilling a fear of him if any judgment is to his dislike.”
Chin went on to say that to commemorate his “dialogue” with the judges a group picture was taken (which can be viewed by going to http://www/kkhighcourt.com/ JudgesnMahathir.htm).
To rub it in, he said, Bernama circulated a press release with one appearing in a Sabah newspaper (The Daily Express May 25 1997) which “was far from stating the truth”. A month later, Chin said he was packed off to a boot camp from May 26-30 together with selected judges and judicial officers.
He said that the boot camp was without any doubt “an attempt to indoctrinate those attending the boot camp to hold the view that the government interest as being more important than all else when we are considering our judgement”.
“Stating this devilish notion was by no less a person than the President of the Court of Appeal. Everyone was quiet during the question sessions. Also invited to the boot camp was a lecturer from a university who berated the election case and the bright spot in this episode was that a judicial officer, during question time, told the lecturer that she had no question but only a statement to make which was that the lecturer was in contempt of court.
“The then prime minister was scheduled to talk but he did not turn up and instead sent his then deputy who instead of talking invited questions and the one question I remembered being asked was — Are politicians looking for girls when they are often seen loitering at posh hotel lobbies?
“The perversion of justice did not stop there. My brother judge Kamil Awang was one morning looking for me after clocking in; we were both then serving in Kuching, Sarawak. When I met up with him in his chambers he was distraught and he told me that he had last night received a telephone call from the then Chief Justice asking him to dismiss the election petition that he was going to hear in Kota Kinabalu.
“He sought my opinion as to what to do with the telephone call.
“We went into the possibility of making a police report or of writing to the Chief Justice a letter to record what he had said over the telephone but in the end he decided against it since it will be his words against that of the Chief Justice,” he said.
Chin told the court that he was happy to later on learn that Kamil did not bow to the pressure by the Chief Justice and went on to hear the petition and thereafter making a decision based on the law and evidence.
The High Court judge said he had twice stood unsuccessfully as a Barisan Nasional candidate for a parliamentary and later for a state seat in Sabah in the 1980s and in one of those elections he was defeated by a DAP candidate.
He said he had also heard other election petitions, namely Yusuf Abdul Rahman v Abdul Ajis & Ors and Lee Hie Kui v Song Swee Guan & Darrell Tsen.
“Now, though no longer the prime minister and so no longer able to carry out his threat to remove judges which should therefore dispel any fear which any judge may have of him, if ever there was such fear, nevertheless the coalition party that he led is still around and the second respondent won on a ticket of that coalition party and it may cross someone’s mind that I may have an axe to grind against the party concerned or any member thereof.
“The petitioner in this case may also have similar view with regard to my defeat by a candidate standing on the ticket of a party to which he belongs.
” So I wish to hear from the parties as to whether they (counsel or parties) in this case entertain any such notion and whether they wish to apply for my recusal so that, if any, I can make a decision thereon.
“After this disclosure, litigants who were affected by the hundreds of judgment that I had handed down since those infamous days may justifiably worry as to whether any of my judgments were in any way influenced by this attempt to hang the Sword of Damocles over my head.
“No amount of words from me would assuage you of your worry; you will have to read my judgments as to whether they are according to the evidence and the law or whether they were influenced by threat.”
Chin then adjourned for half an hour to let the parties digest what he had said and to consider whether they wished to make any application for his recusal.
However, they expressed their full confidence in him in presiding over the hearing of the case.

KEGAGALAN MENGURUSKAN EKONOMI BUKAN KERANA MINYAK SEMATA-MATA..TETAPI INILAH KEBOCORAN YANG ADA

Pembaziran projek-projek gajah putih seperti bangunan kastam Johor Bahru menelan belanja berjuta ringgit.

Anwar: MP BN lompat seperti dirancang

Rahmah Ghazali Jun 8, 08 2:45pm

ALL UMNO MEMBERS AND ALL MALAYSIAN CITIZENS PLEASE READ THIS

More on the mysterious oil subsidies

Some more light on this mysterious subsidy thing:

Most of the country’s oil fields contain low-sulfur, high quality “sweet” crude. Malaysia exports the majority of its oil to Japan, Thailand, Singapore and South Korea.
And we import cheaper, lower-grade oil from elsewhere.
This from The Star:

Commenting on the fuel price increase, the Petronas boss said the corporation did not make a sen from the increase.

“All the oil companies get full market price for the petrol and diesel that they sell and the Government pay them the difference from the fixed price. This is where the subsidy comes into play,” he added.
So, if I read him correctly, there are actual subsidy payments to the oil companies - the difference between the market price and the price at the pump. (Does that mean we are also paying foreign oil companies a subsidy for the privilege of selling oil in the domestic market at a discounted rate?) Now, what I want to know is how much did the government pay to each oil company in subsidies? Come on, give us the full picture, the breakdown of subsidies to each oil company, facts and figures.
Asked about criticisms that Petronas’ accounts and profits were not transparent, Hassan said the corporation published a very detailed annual report which was deposited in the Parliament library.
“For all intents and purposes, Petronas is a public-listed company because we are rated by agencies like Standard and Poors, and Moody. We do not hide anything,” he added.
That is being disingenuous. That glossy annual report doesn’t tell you much. From what I see, it just shows certain financial highlights such as profit before tax etc.
What we want to see are the detailed accounts. You know, like a detailed profit and loss account - not some summary financial highlights. I for one would like to look at the detailed operating and administrative expenses and the investments in fixed assets to see if everything is above board.
And while we are at it, let us have a look at the auditor’s report. How independent is the auditor?
This is the people’s money we are talking about. There must be greater transparency than what we have seen so far.

Now I know those in favour of removing subsidies say the rich, with bigger cars, are often the greatest beneficiaries of oil subsidies. And I can see their point of view. A more accurate market price for oil would encourage conservation and all that. The removal of subsidies would also make us regard oil as the scarce resource that it is especially in the face of increasing difficulty of finding new easily recoverable oil reserves to meet rising global demand. Heck, it might even save the planet from global warming. All these are important considerations. I have always believed in advocating people-centred development that is less polluting and damaging to the environment. Reducing our fossil fuel dependency would be a great step in that direction.
But to raise the price by 40 per cent at one go - when you know that is going to have a sharp knock-on effect on the prices of other essentials and hurt the lower-income group - does not make sense. Especially when the government has not put in place efficient public transport options - and is not likely to do so, given its record. Neither does it inspire confidence that it will effectively empower the poor with the additional resources now at its disposal.
In the first place, are the present high oil prices realistic - or driven by speculation? Listen to what Malaysia Airlines CEO Idris Jala says - and I agree with him:
He said the present oil price at over US$135 was unrealistic and based on certain global events that might have caused a shortage of supply.
“These people (speculators and hedge funds) buy oil futures and say that this or that event may cause an oil shortage.
“Not very long after this, people react to this and by then the message would be ‘there is a shortage of supply’ even though there is none,”…
Speaking as a former oilman, Idris said there were two ways to see whether there was an oil shortage.
“First, look at the oil tankers at sea. If they are not moving and just floating out at sea, that means they have no crude or processed oil to transport. That is not happening and that means there is no shortage.
“Second, go to the petrol stations. If there are long queues, that means there is a shortage. Again, this is not happening and this can only mean there is more than enough supply.
“As an ex-oilman, I tell you there is no shortage.”
Idris pointed out that certain analysts and financial companies that produced reports about the shortage were also oil futures traders.
Asked what he thought was the fair value of crude oil at present, Idris replied: “US$40.”
Idris confirms what I have believed all along. It all boils down to a cheaper US dollar, weak US equity and housing sectors fuelling speculation in safe havens such as commodity futures and hedge funds (including oil and food).
Check out the view of one analyst, Mike Whitney:
The Commodity Futures and Trading Commission (CFTC) is investigating trading in oil futures to determine whether the surge in prices to record levels is the result of manipulation or fraud. They might want to take a look at wheat, rice and corn futures while they’re at it. The whole thing is a hoax cooked up by the investment banks and hedge funds who are trying to dig their way out of the trillion dollar mortgage-backed securities (MBS) mess that they created by turning garbage loans into securities. That scam blew up in their face last August and left them scrounging for handouts from the Federal Reserve. Now the billions of dollars they’re getting from the Fed is being diverted into commodities which is destabilizing the world economy; driving gas prices to the moon and triggering food riots across the planet

Penang Road..........Penang Road ..........Penang Roadddddddddd.....yahoooo

RISALAH UNTUK YANG CERDIK...MENGKAJI...BUKAN SURUH NAIK BASIKAL..TAK KE BANGANG????

SABAH POLITICIANS WARN PM OVER FUEL HIKE

FROM:MALAYSIAKINI

Sabah politicians warn PM over fuel hike
Jun 6, 08 12:46pm
Barisan Nasional component party Sabah Progressive Party (Sapp) leaders did not mince their words in lambasting the federal government for the drastic fuel hike which was announced on Wednesday.
MCPX
While Sapp president Yong Teck Lee warned Abdullah Ahmad Badawi of a serious political fallout for the BN, the party's Youth wing went a step further by calling for the resignation of the prime minister and his cabinet.Yong, also a former chief minister in the state, said that Abdullah's decision to drastically increase petrol prices could lead to severe problems for BN.He also questioned the premier whether he has carefully considered the overall consequences of the fuel hike."If the government losses the faith of the people, then it will find it even more difficult to govern," he said.Abdullah announced on Wednesday that the pump price for petrol would increase by 78 sen - from RM1.92 per litre to RM2.70. The price of diesel increased by a whopping 63.3 percent - from RM1.58 per litre to RM2.58.The price hikes were among government measures to drastically cut the spiralling bill for oil subsidies, which is expected to amount to RM56 billion this year.Yong also said political parties, elected representatives and civil servants were likely to feel more pressure from the people to "do something" to ease their economic woes.He added that the fuel price increases came almost immediately after rice price hikes as well as certain types of the staple food."For those who have just been earning enough to make ends meet every month, the fuel price increases will be a serious blow as they will have to now pay more at the petrol pump and when they buy groceries," Yong elaborated. He said even middle-income earners with salaries of between RM4,000 and RM5,000 would be reeling from the inflationary effect resulting from the fuel price hike.In this regard, Yong doubted the impact of the one-off RM625 rebate for vehicle owners and RM125 for motorcyclists as the there was a time lapse between when money was spent on fuel and when they could receive rebates.Yong further added that many people continue to question why Malaysia as a net petroleum exporting nation till 2014 was experiencing a negative impact from a spike in global oil prices."The man on the street is puzzled as to why Petronas is making so much money while the ordinary folks are losing out,"" he pointed out.Losing trust and confidenceWhile Yong was merely sounding a warning bell, Sapp Youth chief was more straightforward in calling for leaders who "failed to safeguard people's interest" to step down.Au Kam Wah, in a statement issued from Kota Kinabalu, said these leaders should allow others who are more capable to take over. The Elopura state assemblyperson also said the federal government has reneged on its election pledge that it won't hike the price of fuel within this year.Such assurance was later reiterated by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Shahrir Samad. This, he said, had inevitably caused the people to lose their trust and confidence in the government. He also argued that the latest move to increase the fuel price has completely contradicted BN's proclamation of providing "security, peace and prosperity" as contained in its last election manifesto."This inevitably gave the people a bad impression that the government always preached one thing but did another," he said.He also feared that the steep increase of fuel price would trigger what he termed as "economic tsunami" that would inflict devastating suffering to the people."The people just can't accept the reason given by the government that the latest increase in the fuel price was to subsidise food and other items."The increase in fuel price will only cause prices of goods to go up and the rebates given by the government are just too insignificant compare to the additional cost incurred to the people, as a result of the fuel price increase," he pointed out.He further noted that the increase in fuel price would not only burden the people but, also lead to more social issues including the smuggling of subsidised goods and illegal money lending activities which would only become more rampant.Cabinet should step downA similar call was also made by the DAP MP for Kota Kinabalu Dr Hiew King Cheu who said that the entire federal cabinet should step down for failing to manage the nation's wealth and resources prudently."The latest abrupt announcement of fuel price increase by the prime minister again reflected the poor management of the nation's wealth and resources by the BN-led government."It is better for them (the entire federal cabinet) to step down now and let the Pakatan Rakyat take over in order to save this country from being ruined," he said.In a statement issued in Kota Kinabalu yesterday, he also described the latest fuel price increase of 40 percent for petrol and 60 percent for diesel as unreasonable and unacceptable, citing the fact that Malaysia is a oil-producing and exporting country. He also questioned if there was something that the government was not telling the people concerning the nation's crude oil sale."Is it true that our crude oil is being sold at a ‘fixed price' without any fluctuation allowed in the selling price for a set number of years?" he questioned. He added that if that was true it would then be even more unfair to the people of Sabah since the state was also a major contributor for the nation's crude oil export.Apart from this, he also described the proposed rebate of RM625 for motorists in the country as a joke."There are at least 10 millions of vehicles in Malaysia that are entitled to this fuel rebate. That means the government will have to pay out at least RM6 billion a year. Why not use this amount to subsidise our fuel? The whole scheme seems impractical and not logical," he pointed out.
An insult to SabahansSapp veteran Tham Nyip Shen in a separate statement also said that the oil hike was an insult to the people of Sabah who had given almost 100 percent support to the BN in the last general election."The people of Sabah would not have imagined that this is what they would be getting for supporting the BN in the last election," he said.Tham added that the announcement of the latest and steepest fuel price increase a "major mistake" by the BN government. He believed that the said move was made hastily without fully exploring other measures to mitigate the impact of the global fuel price increase. He pointed out that as compared to Hong Kong and Singapore, Malaysia was still very much lagging when comes to effort made to improve the public transportation. The former Sabah deputy chief minister said the the federal government must not simply resort to increase the fuel price while failing to improve public transportation in the country.

"Kami menggesa kerajaan menimbangkan semula keputusan menaikkan harga petrol.
FAKTA
JUMLAH SUBSIDI PETROL 8-10 BILLION
KOS OPERASI SYARIKAT USD 30 SETONG-MANAKALA HARGA MINYAK MENTAH USD 130 SETONG
PERLU BANDING DENGAN NEGARA PENGELUAR MINYAK.
BELANJA TREK KERETAPI 40 BILLION BERBANDING SUBSIDI MINYAK 13-15 BILLION

PROTES BESAR BESARAN MELEBIHI KEMPEN "BERSIH"
