Good news! Bicycles freed… but no “perarakan” allowed

You will be pleased to hear that the Jerit bicycles, yes bicycles, have been released. I guess they were innocent after all, poor bikes - and it’s all systems go for tomorrow.
So with that, the cyclists are expected to hand in a memorandum to Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng tomorrow at around 12.30pm in Komtar.

Sungai Siput MP Jeyakumar Devaraj spent most of this afternoon negotiating with senior police officers in Penang. “I told them, come on-lah, there are so many criminals around for you to deal with; just let our cyclists do their thing and they won’t cause any problem,” he said over the phone.

“If you want, you can send police to help us with the traffic, though even that won’t be necessary as we have our own marshals.”

Top police officers in the state finally relented and gave the green light. Apparently, there’s one caveat though: the cyclists are not allow to go on a perarakan (procession).

Singapore hopes for smooth leadership transition in Malaysia

SINGAPORE (Dec 5, 2008): Singapore hopes there will be a smooth transition of leadership in Malaysia when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi steps down next March.
"I hope for a smooth transition and for political stability," Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said of Malaysia to foreign journalists during a luncheon dialogue here today.

Lee said Malaysia had gone through a number of major political developments in recent months and he hoped the power transition in Malaysia would go well.

Abdullah is expected to pass the premiership baton to his deputy, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, under an agreement reached within their Umno political party
although the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, of which Umno is a component member, won the general election early this year.

Lee said he also hoped that Singapore and Malaysia would continue to work together and improve their relations under Najib.

The dialogue, organised by the Foreign Correspondents Association of Singapore (FCA), was attended by over 100 foreign journalists based in the city-state.
When asked whether the Iskandar Malaysia development in Johor was a threat or an opportunity to Singapore, Lee said "it is a challenge to us."

Lee said that obviously Iskandar Malaysia would like to rival or outdo Singapore but the island republic would be much comfortable working with it "because we feel that Singapore and Johor, together we can be one big centre of vitality and growth and eventually create one critical mass and gain a wider range of opportunities and position ourselves for investors to come in."
The prime minister said foreign investors could take advantage of what both Singapore and Johor had to offer.

Lee said there would be more growth to go around and he added that the competition between the two neighbours "is not Singapore versus Johor, but Singapore versus Shenzhen or Singapore versus Shanghai or Singapore versus Mumbai".

But he added that there was always more competition and cooperation in the national economy.
Lee also touched on the development of the Asean Summit which was postponed by Thailand, the host for this year's meeting, to March next year due to the political crisis in Bangkok.
The prime minister said the postponement was a setback to Asean because Asean's cooperation was vital to all its members.

He said this cooperation had to press on regardless of the political developments in any member countries and it should not be held back by any member just because it was preoccupied by domestic matters.

However, Lee said, the substance of the Asean Summit would proceed because the Asean foreign ministers would continue to meet and bring the Asean Charter to effect.
He added that the Asean trade ministers were also arranging to meet and their agendas included meeting with their dialogue partners to put the final touches to the free trade agreements which had been concluded and needed to be decided upon and brought to effect quickly.

Lee reiterated that the summit could not be postponed for too long because with the current global financial environment affecting all the Asean countries, its leaders needed to meet their dialogue partners to exchange views and compare notes and send a clear signal to the world that "Asean is still in business".

He said that was why Singapore had suggested that the summit be held in January rather than later in March, and if there was a necessity, the summit could be held in Jakarta, the headquarters of the Asean secretariat, with the Thais still the host.

KUALA LUMPUR Malaysia Vote Key Test For Govt And Opposition

A January by-election will provide a key test for Malaysia's incoming prime minister as he seeks to avert a sharp economic slowdown, while a win for the opposition could reignite Anwar Ibrahim's stuttering campaign.

The election commission on Friday set the date of the vote, caused by the death of a government MP, for Jan. 17.

It will be the first vote since the collapse of Anwar's bid to take power on Sept. 16 when he failed to win over the support of 30 government legislators needed to form a new administration.
Anwar, a former deputy prime minister, seemed to be on the verge then of ousting the government that has ruled Malaysia for 51 years after the opposition scored its best result in elections in March and Anwar returned to parliament in August with a landslide win.

The main government party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), accelerated a handover from lacklustre Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to his deputy, Najib Razak.
"If UMNO wins, it will be seen as a victory for Najib personally, but if the opposition wins, it can only be seen as PAS getting stronger since the March general election," said James Chin, professor of political science at Monash University.

Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS), the Islamic party popular with Malay Muslims in Anwar's three party alliance, will contest Kuala Terengganu which is located deep in the Malay heartland.
The constituency is almost 90 percent Malay, the race traditionally represented by UMNO, compared with 60 percent nationally.

The government majority in the constituency in elections held in March this year when there was a massive swing to the opposition was just 628 votes.
"The poll will be seen as a bellwether of the Malay heartland vote," the Singapore-based Straits Times said on Friday.

However, in terms of altering the balance of power in parliament where the government currently has a 55-seat majority of 221 sitting MPs, the vote will not have a massive impact.
TESTING ECONOMIC TIMES

The global economic recession is starting to bite in Malaysia and the government is forecasting economic growth will be 3.5 percent in 2009, the lowest in eight years.

Since UMNO agreed the handover of power, it is Najib who also became finance minister who has made policy and has taken charge of steering Malaysia through the gathering global economic storm.

"This contest will be a bellwether of Najib's ability to galvanise the troops on the ground and convince voters that he is the future of the country," said the influential Malaysian Insider website.

Malaysia's deputy prime minister appeared on Thursday to rule out early elections when he steps up to the premiership in March after the opposition called on the government to seek a new mandate.

The opposition has called for early elections while some government-supporting newspapers have said Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak would want new polls to prove his strength. "This is no time for politicking or to score points politically," Najib told an economic conference. Malaysia is struggling with an economic downturn that the government says will cut growth in 2009 to 3.5 percent, its lowest level in seven years. Some private sector forecasts say there will be no growth at all next year in this Asian country of 27 million people.

In elections last March, the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition suffered its worst ever result and lost the two-thirds parliamentary majority needed to change the constitution. The coalition has ruled Malaysia for 51 years. That has forced Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to hand over power to Najib earlier than a planned transfer in 2010. Najib said Malaysia needed stability to cope with the economic crisis enveloping the world.

"The (2008) general election is over," he told the conference. A senior aide to Najib declined to comment on the record as to whether Najib had indeed ruled out early polls. However, he said the government had a five-year mandate from 2008 and needed to tackle the slowing economy. Although deprived of its two-thirds majority, the government still has a big majority of 55 MPs in the 222-strong parliament.

It faces a by-election in the next 60 days after the death of one of its MPs, but that will not fundamentally alter the balance of power. Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim had claimed he would take power by Sept. 16 with the backing of 30 defectors from the governing coalition, but failed to deliver on his pledge.

World Aids Day 2008: Stop Aids, keep the promise

1 December 2008 marks the 20th year since the creation of World Aids Day. In the past two decades there has been significant progress in prevention and treatment and the campaign acts as a significant advance in awareness raising. Nevertheless, there remain many areas of concern and people with HIV face stigmatism on a daily basis, with no cure obtainable, observes CARAM Asia.

Despite the fact that the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has reported a decrease in the level of infections, last year still saw some two million deaths due to the epidemic. CARAM Asia urges all governments to remain committed to their promise laid out in the Universal Access 2010 and to eliminate all forms of discrimination against positive people. The dynamics of tackling the HIV virus are changing. Prior to 2004, intravenous drug users (IDUs), gay men and sex workers were deemed as the most at risk population (MARP) and measures often focussed primarily on this demographic. But as developing countries increasingly become dependent on remittances, migrant workers and mobilised populations now find themselves as one of the groups within the MARP demographic.

This development indicates that the spread of HIV is now reaching out to a wider area, requiring greater attention from the international community. In order to combat the spread of HIV, more than 70 governments around the world have implemented various forms of HIV-related travel restrictions as part of their national policy. Such restrictive policies have no evidence for a valid public health policy and only add to undermine already existing HIV preventative measures. The greater involvement of people with HIV or Aids (GIPA) principle is destabilised by such guidelines as people with HIV are unable to attend organised events or participate in regional or global initiatives. The use of travel-related restrictions signifies that governments deem HIV as a foreign concern whereas maintaining education would provide a far more beneficial platform to nationals within their borders. To date there is no evidence to suggest that this exclusionary practice limits the spread of HIV but instead only acts to further stigmatise known sufferers.

Many countries such as Malaysia, China, Japan, Singapore and members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) subject migrant workers to mandatory HIV testing and if found to be positive, they are denied stay and immediately deported. In some cases they are not even informed of their own status and this can have catastrophic in the long term. The use of these policies exposes migrant workers and mobile populations, who are already highly vulnerable, to situations of great discrimination and further economic devastation.

Destination governments also routinely deny migrant workers access to medical treatments including anti-retroviral treatment (ART) as they argue that such availability would only burden national health budgets. Counter to this unfounded claim, migrant workers originate from the world's poorest countries and are driven by economic opportunity. People with HIV contribute a great deal both socially and economically, living productive lives that benefit destination countries and policies need to reflect this. Henceforth, any such exclusion of positive people over potential costs of treatment must be based on individual assessments as opposed to generic attitudes.

The current implementation of this policy flies in the face of such agreements as the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS (2001) adopted by 189 countries and the subsequent Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS (Political Declaration 2006). Such legislation also ignores the recommendations of the UNAIDS/ International Organisation for Migrations (IOM) recommendations (June 2004) to remove HIV-related travel restrictions because the virus cannot be transmitted through causal contact.

This year's World Aids Day theme is that of leadership, and it is with this sentiment in mind that CARAM Asia calls for all governments to immediately; * Eliminate HIV-related travel restrictions, for both short- and long-term stay. * Remove any mandatory HIV testing that leads to deportation or as an employment requirement. * Provide migrant workers with appropriate health services and treatments by both governments of origin and destination, including access to ART. CARAM Asia is NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. It is an open network of NGOs and CBOs, consisting of 29 members covering 17 countries in Asia and the Middle East. The CARAM Asia network is involved in action research, advocacy and capacity building with the aim of creating an enabling environment to empower migrants and their communities to reduce HIV vulnerability and to promote and protect the health rights of Asian migrant workers globally.

Pak Lah can stay on as PM if he wants to, says Ku Li

Tengku Razaleigh says he would continue to support Abdullah.


KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 3 — Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi does not need to step down as the Prime Minister after Datuk Seri Najib Razak takes over as party president in March.


“That is his prerogative, he has received the mandate for five years,” said Razaleigh in response to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s contention that Abdullah was still interested to remain in power after the party polls.


He also admitted that he would continue to support Abdullah’s leadership in the government in his capacity as an MP.


“He commands the confidence of the majority of the MPs. And the Prime Minister is appointed by the King and not by the Umno General Assembly,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

The Kelantanese prince however was quick to add that he has no intention of quarreling with the former Prime Minister, who he challenged for the party’s top post in 1987 but lost by 43 votes.
He added that with a weakening Umno, there is no relation now between the party presidency and the premiership.

“Umno today is not as strong as it used to be, we are only in control of 30 per cent of the seats,” said Razaleigh.

Hindu shrine demolished in Malaysia despite ban order

A 15-year-old Hindu shrine has been demolished by the city authorities in Kuala Lumpur even after an order by the Territories ministry banning the destruction of any temple without allocating alternate site.The latest demolition of a shrine in Taman Desa, Seputeh, on Tuesday has raged anger among the Hindu community, who are now asking questions to explain the demolition act, media reports said here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) authorities had apparently issued a notice about the action to be taken in October and pasted the message on the temple's wall, reports added.The notice was not handed over to the shrine authorities.Leading ethnic Indian leader and President of the Malaysian Indian Congress, Samy Vellu, has asked the city authorities to explain their action and has warned of personally taking up the matter to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Deputy Federal Territories Minister M Saravanan said he was upset over the demolition and would meet Federal Territories minister Datuk Zulhasnan Rafique on Wednesday."I have an understanding with the Federal Territories Minister that no existing temples would be demolished unless an alternative site has been given. If there was any development on the land, then the temple would be relocated," he said.

Sungai Siput is a PKR seat

PETALING JAYA, 3 Dec 2008: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is staking its claim on the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat in Perak and the Kota Damansara state seat in Selangor although the elected representatives are from Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).
Dr Syed Husin AliPKR deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali said this even though PSM has been a registered political party since 19 Aug 2008.

Additionally, Parliament has identified the Sungai Siput Member of Parliament (MP) as being from PSM, including in the name plates that are placed where the MPs sit in the Dewan. At the same time, when Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj stands up to speak, PSM is the party name that is displayed on TV monitors.

However, Syed Husin said this did not mean Sungai Siput was no longer a PKR seat. "He went into Parliament as PKR candidate, so it is still PKR's seat," he said.
PKR's official position is that it remains the largest opposition party with 31 parliamentary seats, including Sungai Siput. "What is the issue here? What is the confusion? These are originally PKR seats," Syed Husin said in a phone interview.

He explained that the opposition parties of PKR, PAS and DAP had agreed before the 8 March elections that the Sungai Siput, Kota Damansara and Semenyih seats would be allocated to PKR.
Hence, these seats were "originally" PKR's. "But we allowed PSM candidates to contest there out of good will after they wrote to us and discussions were held. Other parties were unwilling to concede any seats to PSM," he said.

PKR's logoBoth Jeyakumar and Dr Mohd Nasir Hashim, who is the state assemblyperson for Kota Damansara, won the 8 March elections under the PKR logo and banner because PSM was not yet registered then.

(Corrected) PKR also allowed PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan to contest in the Semenyih state seat in Selangor under the PKR banner but he lost.
To another question, Syed Husin said: "It is not true that we gave the seats because we were desperate for good and eligible candidates. We had our own candidates but, like I said, we did it out of good will."

Asked if this meant PSM had no state or parliamentary seats, he said: "Strictly speaking, the three constituencies belong to PKR. The PSM does not have a constituency of its own. The seats it won were also given to PSM to indicate PKR's support for the party's efforts to gain registration then."

When contacted, Jeyakumar said the matter was "no big deal" as long as he was recognised as a PSM representative in Parliament.

He confirmed that he had to stand for elections under the PKR ticket because PSM was not registered then, adding that PSM was grateful for PKR's support.
"Many of us (opposition candidates) won not because of our party alone but the support of other parties, too.

"When I campaigned for the seat, (PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri) Anwar (Ibrahim) came and spoke at my ceramah for me," Jeyakumar said.

Jeyakumar said PSM believed that PKR was playing a positive role in Malaysian politics by focusing on socio-economic issues such as repealing the Internal Security Act and other unjust laws.

PSM, however, has said they would not join the Pakatan Rakyat coalition as there were some areas of disagreement.

(Corrected) In the 1999 general election, Jeyakumar contested unsuccessfully under the DAP banner against incumbent MIC candidate Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu in a three-cornered fight that included Malaysian Democratic Party candidate Mohamad Asri Othman.

In the 2004 elections, Jeyakumar again contested unsuccessfully against Samy Vellu but under the PKR banner. Also contesting the seat then in a three-cornered fight was DAP candidate Sanmugam Ponmugam Ponnan

KUALALUMPUR, Dec 2 (Bernama) — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today denied that the party would make Barisan Nasional’s Seberang Jaya state assemblyman Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah the Penang deputy chief minister I if he joined PKR.While welcoming Arif Shah to join PKR, Anwar said the post of deputy chief minister I had been filled.“I feel we have to be fair to Arif Shah. He has not demanded anything that we consider to be unreasonable. He has not mentioned the post of deputy chief minister and we did not discuss that. That is mere talk.“We are prepared to accept him as a politician and state assemblyman for Seberang Jaya.

There has not been any official decision, only discussions with party representatives. I was told there has been no final decision,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby, here.Arif Shah had been quoted by newspapers as saying that he was disappointed with Permatang Pauh Umno chief Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdul Majid and the Permatang Pauh division for ignoring him and that he had been invited by PKR to join the party.


Asked about the alleged under-performance of Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Mohamad Fairuz Khairuddin, Anwar said the work performance of all PKR leaders was evaluated.

“At PKR, we always evaluate the performance of our leaders. I have been admonished. Tian Chua (PKR Information Chief) has been admonished and Fairuz has been admonished.

“Reprimands have been issued, evaluations have been made. It is not right to say that the evaluations were just on Fairuz because they were for everyone and we seek to have all weaknesses rectified,” he said.

Anwar denies Arif offer

No posts were offered to Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah to entice him to join the Pakatan Rakyat-led Penang state government.


KUALA LUMPUR (Malaysia): No posts were offered to Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah to entice him to cross over to the Pakatan Rakyat-led Penang state government.
Neither had the Seberang Jaya assemblyman demanded any posts, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In confirming that Arif Shah had been wooed by PKR leaders, Anwar said the question of posts did not arise.

"He did not talk about any posts, neither did we discuss it. We did not make any offer as all posts have been filled.

"It is just a rumour," he said at the Parliament lobby yesterday, referring to talk that Arif Shah had been offered a deputy chief minister's post in light of his ongoing feud with the Umno Permatang Pauh division leadership.

No minimum wage yet? Stop giving the same excuses!- ALIRAN

Malaysia is not yet ready for a minimum wage. This is the consistent statement of the Human Resource Ministers of Malaysia. The newly appointed Minister and his deputy are no different, complains Jerit.

On Wednesday, Deputy Human Resource Minister Noraini Othman parroted the same excuses as the previous Human Resource Minister, Dr Fong Chan On, as to why minimum wage cannot be implemented here in Malaysia. Answering questions during the Parliament sessions, Noraini told the Dewan Rakyat that the minimum wage policy is still not a feasible idea for the country and the government has set up the wage committees as an alternative.

What the Deputy Minister forgot to mention is that the wage committees were set up to guide respective industries on their salary schemes. Such councils can only propose a minimum wage for workers of that particular sector but cannot enforce it. Furthermore not all sectors are covered by these wage committees such as the janitors, factor workers, plantation workers and the lowly paid jobs.So it looks like the Deputy Minister is trying hard to mislead the parliamentarians.

However simple rationale thinking would easily bring anyone to the conclusion that the minimum wage would benefit the majority of Malaysian working class.The point is that, under current circumstances, with the increasing cost of living, the workers in Malaysia need a minimum wage scale to lead a decent life instead of being pushed into poverty.

This means the minimum wage would provide sufficient purchasing power to enable a worker to attain a basic standard of living. But the next argument will be, the world is facing an economic crisis; so it is not possible to implement a Minimum Wage Act just now- another opportunistic argument to deny the rights of the workers. But when the economy is booming and the workers demand a Minimum Wage Act, the same government will say, the economy is booming and investors are investing; so if we introduce a Minimum Wage Act, investors will leave the country and invest in countries such as Vietnam and China - another convenient excuse.

What the government and employers fail to understand is, a justified minimum wage will motivate workers, enhance productivity, reduce dependency on welfare and enable the workers to enjoy the benefits of economic growth.Thailand, Indonesia, China, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, India, Venezuela and first world countries have enacted a Minimum Wage Act to protect the lower income groups and ensure that the majority of workers earn a living wage, After all, a Minimum Wage Act should be enacted to provide a living wage because the current wage is not enough to live on.

Thus, Jerit demands that the Malaysian government stop giving excuses and deceiving the people. Enact the Minimum Wage Act immediately to safeguard the interests of the working class, who are the foundation of Malaysia's progress and economic growth.

Zaid sacked from Umno

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 3 – Former de facto Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim was sacked from Umno late last night for breaking the party's code of ethics.

Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi who chaired the party supreme council meeting that lasted more than three hours said Zaid's attendance at opposition events was inappropriate.
"It is against the party's code of ethics," said Abdullah when asked to elaborate on Zaid's sacking.
The former Kota Bahru MP had attended a DAP victory dinner in Penang and PKR’s annual national congress last weekend.

When asked whether Zaid wanted to be sacked from the party by attending the events, Abdullah said it was just a perception.

"Let it be interpreted that way, but most importantly Umno has to be consistent. We cannot have double standards," said Abdullah adding that the decision cannot be appealed.
When met at the PKR congress, Zaid had told reporters that he did not expect to be sacked from the party.

Zaid had resigned from Abdullah’s Cabinet in protest against the use of the Internal Security Act (ISA) recently.
He had been appointed minister earlier this year and was tasked with bringing about reforms to the judiciary.

Since his resignation Pakatan Rakyat partides have been actively courting him to join them.

KUALA LUMPUR: Penasihat Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hari ini menafikan dakwaan bahawa parti itu menawarkan jawatan Timbalan Ketua Menteri Pulau Pinang 1 kepada Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Seberang Jaya, Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah jika ahli Umno itu bersetuju untuk menyertai PKR.

Anwar berkata, soal menawarkan jawatan yang kini disandang oleh ADUN bagi kerusi PKR di Penanti, Mohamad Fairus Khairuddin tidak timbul kerana ia hanyalah ura-ura yang berbangkit tambahan pula jawatan itu kini sudah diisi.

“Saya sudah bincang dengan Ketua Menteri, Lim Guan Eng dan PKR negeri…perkara ini tidak berbangkit.

“Soal mengalu-alukan kehadiran Arif Shah memang ada tetapi ia tidak melibatkan perubahan kepimpinan di Pulau Pinang,” katanya kepada media di lobi Parlimen di sini, hari ini.

Anwar berkata, beliau masih belum menemui Arif Shah berhubung kemungkinan wakil rakyat BN di bahagian Permatang Pauh itu akan menyertai PKR tetapi ada wakil parti yang telah berbincang dengan beliau mengenai perkara itu.

“Kita hormati keputusan beliau (Arif Shah) dan kita juga harus berlaku adil kepada beliau. Beliau tidak menuntut sesuatu yang tidak munasabah.

“Beliau tidak menuntut jawatan Timbalan Ketua Menteri Pulau Pinang dan kita juga tidak berbincang.

“Kita sedia menerima beliau (menyertai PKR) sebagai ahli politik dan ADUN Seberang Jaya serta atas dasar perjuangan. Kita akan bantu supaya khidmat beliau di di kawasannya akan lebih berkesan,” katanya.

Ditanya mengenai prestasi Mohd Fairus yang mendapat kritikan pelbagai pihak di Pulau Pinang, Anwar berkata, setakat ini teguran dan penilaian telah pun dilakukan.

“Namun ia bukan untuk beliau seorang tapi untuk semua ADUN dan ahli Parlimen PKR supaya kelemahan yang disebut itu boleh diperbaiki,” katanya.

Shah Alam- Kehadiran Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim untuk menyampaikan ceramah di malam penutup kongress PKR membangkitkan semangat yang cukup tinggi di kalangan para perwakilan dan pemerhati serta orang ramai yang memenuhi stadium Shah Alam.Dianggarkan 10 ribu hadirin hadir memenuhi ruang dewan dan diluar.

Sebelum beliau berucap,DSAI secara bersembunyi sempat duduk di barisan para hadirin bersama-sama orang ramai untuk mendengar ucapan para perwakilan pada malam tersebut. Antara yang berucap ialah Menteri besar Tan Sri Khaid Ibahim,Azmin Ali,Sivarasa ,Dato Dr Jefri Kitingan,Ketua wanita Zuraida Kamaruddin dan Dr Lim Boon Chay.


Kehadiran Dato Seri Anwar ke pentas bersama Preseden PKR ke pentas di sambut dengan laungan Reformasi yang laungkan oleh Cikgu Bard dan diikuti oleh orang ramai dan kemudiannya nyanyian lagu parti di mainkan.Para hadirin bangun berdiri memberi penghormatan kepada penasihat PKR tersebut dan menyanyi bersama-sama, Ini memberi perangsang kepada semua ahli parti baik yang didalam dewan dan juga di luar dewan melalui siaran langsung yang di tonton seramai 2.5 juta orang melalui siaran internet.

Beliau memulakan ucapan dengan memberikan contoh barisan kepimpinan PKR yang mampu untuk berkhidmat kepada rakyat. Malah ada yang mempertikaikan PKR jika tanpa beliau.6 tahun terpenjara tidak bermakna saya duduk diam malah saya membaca di dalam tahanan.

“Ada yang mempertikaikan parti kita tanpa Anwar,namun sedarkah dimana parti diketika 6 tahun Anwar di penjara, namun parti ini terus berkembang,Azizah dan parti ini bangkitkandengan kekuatan kita, kekuatan rakyat .Orang yang membicarakan tanpa Anwar itu tidak buka kitab” demikian jelas Anwar lagi.

Beliau juga memuji rakyat yang berani kerana jika 6 tahun beliau terpenjara dan “rehat’ namun para reformis masih berterusan di sembur dengan gas dan di hentam dengan belantan.

Malah pesan kepada semua perwakilan dan pemerhati juga rakyat ,bahawa PKR akan meneruskan lagi agenda untuk menyampaikan informasi kepada semua rakyat untuk mendengar dan mengatur semula penerangan dari Perlis sampai ke Sarawak, dan para wakil rakyat harus bekerja kuat untuk kepentingan rakyat dan jangan termakan hasutan UMNO yang ketandusan idea untuk memburukkan kepimpinan dan melaga-lagakan rakyat.


“Oleh karana kita ada agenda pembaharuan , dan ianya harus berterusan , maka sebagai sebuah parti reformasi harus memperbaiki kedudukan parti kerana jika diambil sikap berpuas hati ,kuat ,pandai maka itu bukan parti reformasi yang sentiasa menuntut pembaharuan untuk rakyat Jika menuntut perubahan yang segera kita tidak mampu untuk teruskan, namun kita harus memperbaiki kedudukan kita,dan jangan sesekali mendengar fitnah UMNO yang bengkrup idea.10 tahun menggunakan kekuatan polis,fitnah ianya masih kalah di Semenanjung.Apakah pintar media macam ini”.demikian tegas Anwar lagi yang merujuk kepada media pemerintah.

Dato Seri Anwar juga menarik perhatian bahawa sebagai sebuah parti reformasi, harus mengamalkan pendekatan yang terbuka dan ini harus memberi ruang yang lebih kepada generasi muda.Sebagai parti reformasi juga harus mengamalkan keadilan tanpa menindas yang lain.Bukan tujuan membantu sesuatu kaum memijak kaum yang lain dan bercakap lain kepada kaum lain dan lain pula kepada kaum yang satu lagi.Pendekatan ini menurut Anwar adalah pendekatan lapuk dan bukan untuk membantu rakyat yang berbilang kaum.malah beliau menarik perhatian tentang nasib kaum Penan di Sarawak yang mempunyai kadar kematian yang tinggi.

“Tahun ini saya lihat rakan-rakan Sabah dan Sarawak luar biasa.Dulu memang ada, tetapi kini kebangkitan itu kita lihat semakin ketara.Kita akan teruskan perjuangan,melawan untuk rakyat dan juga tidak akan mengalah”.tegas Anwar.

Mengenai isu 16 September, beliau berkata orang yang bersetuju untuk menyeberang tidak mahu didedahkan butir-butir dan syaratnya tidak didedahkan sehingga mereka bersedia.Kita memberikan satu target dan kita telah gunakan saluran yang sesuai dengan perlembagaan.Bila ini semua tidak berhasil, kita minta sidang khas , namun ini juga tidak mahu.Orang yang menyokong dan sokongan bulat yang diterima dan esoknya kita diserang oleh orang yang sama.Bila ditanya,jawapannya ialah supaya tidak disyakki.Malah menurut Anwar lagi , beliau tetap yakin bahawa ianya akan berlaku.


“Saya diberikan jaminan sebelum ini oleh pihak-pihak yang ingin menyeberang dengan bersyarat dan syaratnya ialah sehingga mereka benar-benar bersedia dan tidak didedahkan sebelum waktunya.malah adakalanya kita di serang dalam dewan , dan bila kita tanya kenapa, jawapannya ialah agar tidak di syakki” demikian jelas Anwar lagi.


Menurut Anwar lagi, sebagaimana beliau yakin akan kemenangan dalam beberapa buah negeri dalam kempen menawan negeri sebelum pilihanraya lalu, maka keyakinan itu juga memberi kekuatan kepada beliau bahawa akan tiba masanya nanti perubahan ini akan berlaku.Cuma masa dan tarikhnya tidak akan diberitahu kerana ini akan menjadi isu dan mainan oleh pemerhati politik.


“Sebagaimana saya yakin akan kemenangan di beberapa buah negeri dalam pilihanraya lalu, maka keyakinan itu juga akan berlaku dalam perubahan ini.Soal perubahan kuasa untuk memuaskan hati pemerhati politik ,ianya akan sukar untuk dijelaskan. Tetapii saya yakin dengan apa yang saya yakin dan InsyaAllah ,Jika di takdirkan ianya tarikhnya akan berlaku ? sila tunggu .Sementara itu gegarkan Sarawak.Sarawak adalah barisan hadapan kita sekarang.malah saya mahu setiap minggu harus ada para wakil turun ke Sarawak tanpa kecuali dan kita tetapkan jadual ke sana selepas lawatan saya nanti”.jelas Anwar serius dalam menawan Sarawak.Beliau mengakhiri ucapan dengan memberi ingatabn agar Sabah juga di perkuatkan lagi jentera parti di sana dan diberi tumpuan.Sebelum beliau berangkat keluar dewan laungan reformasi di laungkan menggegarkan suasana stadium Shah Alam.

Penang probes council’s financial fiasco

BUTTERWORTH: Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) president Farizan Darus has been told to go on leave pending investigations into the council’s plunging reserves.
The Penang Government also announced the appointment of state financial officer Datuk Supiah Md Yusof as acting council president. Supiah will also head a committee to investigate MPSP’s financial fiasco.


Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said Supiah would be given two weeks to complete investigations and identify any wrongdoings and those responsible for the council’s financial plight.
He added that Supiah and her team would find out why MPSP’s reserves, which stood at RM230.1mil on Jan 1, 2000, had depleted to only RM6.4mil now.
Supiah said she would be calling up several people, including Aseania Development Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Musa Sheikh Fazir, who is also Bukit Mertajam Umno division chief, during her investigations.

Lim claimed the new council building in Bandar Baru Perda, Bukit Mertajam, costing RM84.3mil, was built by Aseania Development without any tender being called.
Lim added that MPSP had the option of building its new headquarters on a 7.5ha site in Ampang Jajar at a lower cost but decided on the Bandar Perda proposal.


“We will also investigate the loss of some RM50.3mil in annual allocation given to 21 state assemblymen and RM8.9mil to 24 MPSP councillors during the previous state government,” he told a news conference.
“We will also find out why the annual maintenance cost of RM800,000 for the council’s headquarters was awarded to Aseania Linear District Cooling system Sdn Bhd when the cost was too high,” Lim said at a press conference at the council headquarters before witnessing the swearing-in of Supiah as MPSP’s acting president on Monday.
He said the council would not slack in its services to ratepayers although it was facing financial constraints.


Asked if action would be taken against those found guilty, Lim replied that it was up to the police or Anti-Corruption Agency to take action as it was within their powers.

Takeover of Federal Govt as soon as possible, says PKR adviser

Saying it would occur in "the shortest possible time," the PKR adviser said it was not a question of "when" but that it involved the people.

"Insya Allah, we will certainly be in Putrajaya soon," he said in his address yesterday at the close of the PKR national congress.

current system which he said was corrupt and insulted their intelligence.
At the March 8 general election, Barisan Nasional won 140 parliamentary seats while the Opposition secured 82.

Anwar, however, said he was confident he could topple the Federal Government as there were more than enough Barisan MPs who wanted to cross over to their side.
He had earlier claimed that the Pakatan Rakyat would be able to form a new government by Sept 16.

When that failed to materialise, people began having doubts and some have even accused him of lying.

Anwar said the plans were still on track, adding that he believed in the power of prayer and the wisdom of the people. His wife, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail rose to his defence and the takeover plan.

She reminded delegates they had already won by making a comeback in the recent elections after being nearly wiped out in 2004. On members who kept asking if the takeover would really happen, she advised them to be more patient.

Deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali and vice president Azmin Ali also told the delegates to have faith in Anwar's takeover plans.
Dr Syed Husin said he had known Anwar for more than 40 years and was his lecturer at university.

"Some are cynical about the road to Putrajaya. But from my experience, I believe and trust in his confidence to get to Putrajaya. This is not empty talk," he said in his winding-up speech.
Azmin, who said he had known Anwar for 25 years, said he was certain the takeover would happen soon.

Deputy CM Mohd Fairus denied replacement rumours

PERMATANG PAUH : Penang’s Deputy Chief Minister I Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin declined rumours that he is being replaced, claiming that the PKR leadership has not given any such indication.


When he was contacted, Fairus said he was not informed by either PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim or the party’s top leaders of a replacement.

“From what I understand, it is only (Seberang Jaya assemblyman) Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah who has said so. I strongly believe that if there was going to be a change, I would be duly informed.


“If he wants to join the party, I am happy and welcome him but I don’t think he will replace me,” he said.He was commenting on news reports quoting Arif Shah as saying that he might leave Umno for the Pakatan Rakyat state government.


The sole Barisan Nasional-elected representative in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency is not on talking terms with Permatang Pauh Umno division chief Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdul Majid.

The Mandarin-speaking assemblyman claimed that he was also offered the DCM’s post by Anwar to join the party but was undecided.Arif Shah, who took on Anwar in the recent Permatang Pauh by-election, had described the latter as his “sifu” (master) and friend.


He said Anwar was his “teacher” when the former was the Umno Permatang Pauh division chairman and he was the division Youth chief.Fairus hit out at Arif Shah for making such an “irresponsible, improper and politically immature” statement in the media.


“Since day one of my appointment, certain quarters have been trying to pull me down. I am the youngest DCM in the history of Malaysian politics so of course there is jealousy.“I was voted in by the people.

They will not get rid of me because I am a fighter and I will never retreat,” said the Penanti assemblyman who has been plagued by accusations of under-performing.“We are a new government.


I was only elected eight months ago and am still learning and improving,” he said, adding that the process would “take time”.

State Gerakan chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said Arif Shah leaving Barisan was an “internal Umno matter”.


If this really happen, what will Fairus do to defend himself and whether is it true or only a political game who wants the pose as a Deputy Chief Minister.

BATU PAHAT 30 Nov. – Pucuk pimpinan Barisan Nasinal (BN) diminta bertindak tegas terhadap Timbalan Presiden MCA, Datuk Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek berhubung kenyataannya menolak konsep ketuanan Melayu.
Ketua UMNO Bahagian Sri Gading, Datuk Mohamad Aziz berkata, ini kerana kenyataan tersebut telah menghiris hati masyarakat Melayu terutama ahli UMNO yang selama ini menjadi rakan baik MCA.
Menurutnya, walaupun kenyataan itu merupakan pandangan peribadi Soi Lek, namun ia lahir daripada seorang pemimpin yang sepatutnya menjadi sahabat dalam komponen BN.
‘‘Kenyataan ini sangat menyinggung dan menghiris hati masyarakat Melayu,” katanya selepas merasmikan Sambutan Kesenian Islam Kemas Peringkat Negeri Johor di Universiti Tun Hussein Onn, di sini semalam.
