World in Gaza Support Day January 10, 2009 - 04:52

WORLD CAPITALS — Thousands of people poured into the streets around the world on Friday, January 9, to protest unabated Israeli attacks against Palestinian civilians in the bombed-out Gaza Strip.

"Gaza excuse us: opening Rafah is not in our hands," chanted Egyptian protestors, referring to Rafah crossing with Gaza, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP).

In Yemen, nearly 200,000 demonstrators marched across the streets of the capital Sanaa against the Israeli attacks.

"Death to America and Israel" and "Islam would win" were among the slogans chanted by the protestors.
Tens of thousands of people also protested following the Friday prayers in the southern port city of Aden.
In Qatar, prominent Muslim scholar Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, president of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, led a huge protest in support of Gaza.

The protestors criticized the world inaction on the Israeli attacks and called on Arab leader to act to stop the Israeli aggression.
Qaradawi has called on people worldwide to make Friday a "day of support" for Gaza.
In the occupied West Bank, thousands of people swept the streets to protest the Israeli atrocities against the Palestinians in Gaza.

In Iraq, thousands of people marched in several Iraqi cities to protest the Israeli assaults.
Nearly 800 Palestinians have been killed and more than 3,300 wounded in a two-week Israeli offensive in Gaza.

In Jordan, which has a peace treaty with Israel, nearly 2,000 protestors tried to march towards the Israeli embassy in the capital Amman, but were prevented by police.
"No Israel embassy on Arab territory" and "Arab rulers are cowards," chanted the protestors, wearing traditional Palestinian keffiyeh and carrying Palestinian and Jordanian flags.
The protestors also set up a symbolic cemetery with the word "Gazan" written on each "grave."

In Kenya, police fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse hundreds of Muslims who had gathered after Friday prayers to protest against the deadly Israeli attacks in Gaza.
"No to shedding innocent blood," "End the massacre in Gaza," "Israel, stop killing innocent people," read some of the placards.

In Europe, more than 2,000 demonstrated in Athens and Thessaloniki, setting fire to US and EU flags outside the US embassy and the Israeli flag outside the Israeli mission.
Smaller protests also took place in Bucharest, Vienna, Prague, and The Hague where the Dutch parliament's foreign affairs committee debated the Gaza conflict.
Friday sermons in mosques across Europe focused on the Israeli attacks in Gaza and means of providing help to the defenseless Palestinian civilians.

In Asia, thousands of Malaysians marched to the US embassy in the capital Kuala Lumpur to protest the US bias to Israel.
Hundreds of Kashmiris also took to the streets in the Indian-controlled region to protest the Israeli assaults.
"Long live Palestine," chanted the protestors as they emerged from mosques following the Friday prayers.

Malaysian group boycotts top US products

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian Muslim group began a boycott of top US products yesterday as protesters demanded a halt to the Gaza conflict amid growing anger in the Muslim world over Israel’s 14-day offensive.

The Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia said Muslims in the Southeast Asian country would not buy goods produced by US toothpaste manufacturer Colgate-Palmolive Co, soft drink maker Coca-Cola and coffee chain Starbucks to protest US inaction against the attacks. “We urge Muslim consumers internationally to unite so that we can teach a lesson to Israel and its allies,” Ma’amor Osman, an official with the association, told reporters in the compound of the national mosque after Friday Muslim prayers. This is to object to the arrogance and cruelty of Israel and its allies towards the Palestinians.” He urged the Malaysian government to end all its contracts with US-owned firms.

The United States is among Malaysia’s single largest export markets, absorbing more than a tenth of its total shipments. More than 750 have been killed in the Gaza clashes and Israel pushed ahead with its offensive yesterday, ignoring a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire to the conflict. The attacks have sparked angry demonstrations in countries with large Muslim populations such as Indonesia, Turkey, Iraq,
Jordan and Egypt.

About 2,000 Muslim protesters gathered outside the US embassy in the Malaysian capital yestertay, shouting anti-Israel slogans as about 100 anti-riot police stood watch. One protester carried a baby doll covered in a bloody shroud, while some burned effigies of US President George W Bush and Israel Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Several mosques in the Malaysian capital held special prayers yesterday for the Palestinians. Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has called for sanctions against Israel, saying the world has a “moral duty” to save the Palestinians, the New Straits Times newspaper reported yesterday. Former premier Mahathir Mohamad urged Muslims worldwide to to stop using the US dollar.

“If enough of us do this, then the value (of the US dollar) will fall, just like what they did to us in 1997,” Mahathir said, referring to the 1997 Asian economic crisis that he blamed on
currency speculators.

Mahathir urged the United Nations to set up a war crimes tribunal to try Israeli leaders involved in the attacks against the Palestinians

Israeli bombardment pounds Gaza January 08, 2009 - 08:22
Thousands of Palestinians have fled their homes in the southern Gaza Strip as Israeli forces bombarded Rafah after dropping leaflets to warn local residents about an impending blitz.Witnesses said that homes, suspected smuggling tunnels and a mosque were hit in the area along the Egyptian border early on Thursday.
The leaflets warned that that the Israeli military "will bomb the area due to its use by terrorists to [dig] tunnels and to stock up" on weapons.Hundreds of tunnels are believed to cross under the Egyptian border around Rafah allowing Palestinians to smuggle in basic supplies, in short supply due to the Israeli blockade, and weapons.
An Israeli army spokeswoman said the military dropped the flyers "as in the past to avoid civilian casualties".At least 700 Palestinians, including 219 children, have died in Gaza since Israel began its assault on December 27. More than 3,080 people have also been wounded.Eight Israeli soldiers and three civilians have died in the same period.Besieged Gazans
Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin, reporting from Gaza City, said such flyers would have frightened the civilian population of southern Gaza.

"Israel has cut the northern part of Gaza from the southern part. Those in the southern part wouldn't be able to go to the north seeking refuge and vice versa," he said.Mohyeldin said there was also another night of heavy bombardment in the north around Gaza City."Most of the targets hit throughout the northern part of the territory included mosques and homes that have been previously struck on the previous days of this conflict. Some of the government buildings and police stations that were nearly destroyed are now completely levelled," he said.
The AFP news agency quoted witnesses as saying that dozens of Israeli tanks had entered southern Gaza and were heading towards Rafah.Fierce fighting was also reported between Palestinian fighters and Israeli soldiers around Khan Yunis. It was unclear if the latest offensive was the "third stage" of the offensive approved by the Israeli security cabinet on Wednesday.A senior Israeli defence official said a meeting chaired by Ehud Olmert, the prime minister, had "approved continuing the ground offensive, including a third stage that would broaden it by pushing deeper into populated areas".
The renewed fighting followed a three-hour lull that allowed beleaguered Gazans and aid workers to recover dead bodies, treat the wounded, and gather much-needed supplies in and around Gaza City.Israeli officials said a second temporary ceasefire was due to be observed on Wednesday to allow humanitarian aid into the strip.'Shocking' incident
The International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) on Thursday accused the Israeli military of not helping wounded Palestinians in an incident in Gaza City that it described as "shocking".ICRC and Palestinian Red Crescent workers said in a statement that several wounded Palestinians and four weakened children were found alongside 12 dead bodies in houses hit by shelling in Zaytun, less than 100 metres from Israeli positions."The ICRC believes that in this instance the Israeli military failed to meet its obligation under international humanitarian law to care for and evacuate the wounded," it said.

The Red Cross team, including four ambulances, had only gained safe passage from Israeli army to access the neighbourhood on January 7 after trying for four days, the ICRC said. Meanwhile, Israeli security forces in the occupied West Bank shot dead a Palestinian in a confrontation at a Jewish settlement near Jerusalem, Israeli radio reported.

Wan Ahmad Farid kena buktikan ' jangan nilai buku berdasarkan kulit'

9, 2009 : 05.27 pM

"Kenapa anda bertanya (prestasi) calon kita (BN). Anda tidak bertanya tentang calon PAS. Kita kena buat perbandingan (dengan wajar)."

Mungkin orang Terangganu sendiri tak kenal Wan Ahmad Farid berbanding calon PAS

USUNG KERANDA DEMI 152

REF: Malaysiakini

Philip Bowring: Malaysian pretensions

HONG KONG: In a move that could backfire by drawing attention to discrimination against Chinese, Indian and other minorities in Malaysia, the country has claimed a role in the advancement of Malays in other lands.

The Malaysian deputy prime minister and heir apparent, Najib Razak, told an international Malay/Muslim audience recently that his government would work to help support them in countries from the Philippines and Singapore to Madagascar, Sri Lanka and South Africa.
Najib's remarks may draw the attention of China, India and other countries to what has hitherto been regarded by most outsiders as a domestic issue: Malaysia's official economic and social preferences for Malays, and by extension Muslims, which disadvantage Malaysia's non-Malay minorities, mostly Chinese and Indian. His statements are also sure to irritate Indonesia, Malaysia's larger neighbor and fount of Malay culture.

The word "Malay" can mean a language that is native to east Sumatra, which became the lingua franca of trade in Southeast Asia and is now the official language of Indonesia and Malaysia. Or it can mean the relatively small, mostly Muslim, ethnic group of some 20 million straddling Malaysia, and parts of Indonesia and southern Thailand. Or it can mean the much wider Malay racial/linguistic group of more than 300 million people, about 60 percent Muslim, encompassing most of Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia - plus many Madagascans and minorities in Vietnam and Cambodia.

In the 1960s there was talk of a loose Malay confederation encompassing Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia. However, other issues obstructed this grand idea. For Malaysia in particular, religion has come to play a central role, identifying all Malays with Islam. This notion is viewed as dangerous by many people in Indonesia, which is 80 percent Muslim but is a secular state focused on national rather than religious identity.

Najib's effort to include Madagascar in his speech was also contentious. Madagascar was first settled by people from the Indonesian archipelago long before Islam appeared. The Muslim minority in Madagascar has mostly Arab and Indian roots. As for the Malays of South Africa and Sri Lanka, though Muslim, their roots were mostly in Java and other parts of what was once Dutch-ruled Indonesia.

Malaysian pretensions could be dismissed as hot air. But official discrimination against non-Malays in the country was eventually going to attract criticism from human rights groups and other governments. It is hard to argue that the numerically dominant Malays, who control most of the political, judicial and bureaucratic levers of power and many of the country's major corporations, need help. Yet Malaysia's leadership continues to claim that the Malay race and religion would be threatened by removal of privileges.

Many Malays view these privileges as perpetuating a system of patronage that enriches the elite and makes the Malay poor dependent. Yet changing the system is difficult. While gains of the opposition coalition led by Anwar Ibrahim in last year's election offer some hope, it is naturally hard for the majority to vote away privileges - which is why India and China could become catalysts.

For decades China and India have stuck with the doctrine of noninterference in the internal affairs of other countries. But as their global role blossoms, attitudes are changing. China's eye on the well-being of ethnic Chinese everywhere will increase as Chinese investment and tourism become more important to countries in Southeast Asia with significant Chinese minorities. Ethnic Chinese make up 25 percent of Malaysia's population and are subject to formal discrimination. India has less potential influence, but Indian politicians have begun to listen to Hindu groups complaining about discrimination and destruction of their temples.

In practice, Malaysia is usually more tolerant than official policies and statements by politicians and clerics might suggest. The prime minister is married to a Eurasian who was born a Christian. Various royals have married non-Malays. However, mixed marriages have become rarer as barriers are strengthened by sectarian privileges allied to religious dogmatism.
So maybe the outside world could do Malaysia a favor by taking Najib at his word and speaking up in support of the minority's reasonable request - equality for non-Malay Malaysians as well as for Malay minorities elsewhere.

“Kalau PAS (membantah), kuat suaranya. Kalau PKR bersuara, kuat,” kata Dr Hassan.

NGO terbabit, antaranya, Kesatuan pekerja DBP,Persatuan Linguistik Malaysia, Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (Abim), Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Pelajar Islam Malaysia (PKPIM), Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Semalaysia (Gamis), Persatuan Pengamal Pendidikan Malaysia dan Angkatan Sains Islam Malaysia (Asasi)

Anwar admits Pakatan members have problems

Three members of Pakatan Rakyat have differences of opinion.

Wed, Jan 07, 2009Asia News Network

KUALA TERENGGANU: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has admitted that the three members of Pakatan Rakyat have differences of opinion.

However, the PKR adviser said it was normal to have such differences and a healthy debate over issues.

"Ronnie Liu (of the DAP) may say Christianity is better, while I may say Islam is better but overall we agree on our common goal which is to govern this country better," he told an audience of several thousand during a ceramah for the Kuala Terengganu by-election.
Anwar said Pakatan Rakyat leaders have respect for each other and it was only Umno which was using the mass media to create confusion.

He said PAS can win the by-election as "the voters are intelligent enough to see Umno's dirty tactics".

On hudud laws, Anwar said Pakatan Rakyat has no intention to impose it on non-Muslims.
Opposition leaders such as DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, PAS spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat spoke at the rally near the beach front here.

Anwar also urged Pakatan Rakyat leaders to study the success of PAS in Kelantan under Nik Aziz who has led the state since 1990.

Malaysia's Anwar renews pledge to topple government

By M. Jegathesan

KUALA TERENGGANU, Malaysia - Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday renewed his vow to seize power from the ruling coalition, as the two sides lock horns for a key by-election.Anwar has laid low since failing to meet a self-imposed September 2008 deadline to unseat the Barisan Nasional government, after general elections that saw the coalition handed its worst results in half a century.

The opposition alliance is now hoping to reinvigorate itself with a win in the January 17 by-election in northeastern Terengganu state, which is seen as a referendum on the political mood since the March 2008 national polls."I want to say that we in the alliance are determined to topple the Barisan Nasional coalition," Anwar said at an opposition rally here late Tuesday that drew some 10,000 supporters."For a start, I will help our alliance candidate from PAS (Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party) obtain a big victory," he said on the seafront of the state capital Kuala Terengganu.

Top figures in the alliance -- Anwar's Keadilan as well as the Islamic party PAS and the Democratic Action Party that represents ethnic Chinese -- stood shoulder-to-shoulder to dispel signs the partnership is under strain. The partnership of three ideologically divided parties is intent on putting its differences aside for the by-election, which will be contested by PAS candidate Mohamad Abdul Wahid, 52.The ruling party UMNO (United Malays National Organisation) is fielding deputy home minister Wan Ahmad Farid, 46, for the vote, which will indicate whether it has lured back support since the general elections.Anwar had said he would topple the government by mid-September with the help of defecting lawmakers, after elections that saw the opposition gain five states and a third of parliamentary seats in unprecedented results.

But that deadline came and went and the promised mass defections from the Barisan Nasional never materialised -- underlining the dominance of the coalition which is the only government Malaysia has ever known.Anwar's momentum completely stalled in October when Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi agreed to stand down next March, defusing public anger at the government's handling of the economy and failure to introduce promised reforms.

The government is now exploiting bickering within the opposition, but Anwar said the alliance was united despite disagreements over issues such as a PAS call for the introduction of Islamic "hudud" law including the stoning of adulterers. And he said that Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is slated to take over from Abdullah in March and is spearheading the by-election campaign, would suffer if the government loses."Najib is heading the Barisan Nasional machinery and if Barisan loses, it will hurt his credibility.
The loss to the government will be a big blow to Najib," he said."It is a barometer for the future direction of politics in Malaysia," he said. "As I see it, the winds of change from the March 8 electoral tsunami are still blowing strong."DAP chairman Lim Kit Siang said Najib may be forced to call elections much earlier than the end of the government's five-year term which expires in 2013."We hope a victory here will be a yardstick for us to win the next general election and take over the country. It is possible that a snap election would be held at year end," he said.

Candidates start campaign in Malaysia by-election

The Associated Press

Published: January 6, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Three candidates launched their campaigns Tuesday for a parliament seat seen as a popularity test of Malaysia's ruling coalition.

At stake is the seat representing Kuala Terengganu, the capital of northeastern Terengganu state, where support for the governing National Front coalition and the opposition Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party is almost evenly split.

The seat became vacant after the incumbent, who narrowly defeated an opposition candidate in March, died in November. About 80,000 people will be eligible to cast votes on Jan. 17 for a new representative.

The three candidates whose petitions to run for office were approved Tuesday are the National Front's Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, a former deputy home minister; PAS candidate Mohamad Abdul Wahid Endut, and an independent candidate.

The results of the election will not change the balance of power in parliament, where Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's National Front retains a comfortable majority.
Today in Asia & Pacific

But it will provide an indicator of the Front's popularity, which had plunged last year because of anger among the ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities who complained of discrimination in jobs, education and religion.

The Kuala Terengganu by-election will test the organizational skills, popularity and leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is scheduled to take over from Abdullah by April.
Najib, who arrived in Kuala Terengganu on Monday, told Wan Ahmad that he must "shake hands with up to 200,000 people" if necessary.

The National Front will be seeking to prevent another electoral loss after former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim won a by-election in September to return to Parliament as opposition leader after a 10-year gap.

Meanwhile, police detained five opposition members in Kuala Terengganu on Monday for putting up posters of a slain Mongolian woman whom the opposition has sought to link to Najib.

Malaysia heads into critical by-election

Print by M. Jegathesan

Campaigning kicked off Tuesday in a critical by-election seen as a test of the Malaysian government's popularity since disastrous losses in national polls last year.
"We must ensure we win this election. We must regain our political strength and influence," said Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is leading the campaign for the January 17 vote in northeastern Terengganu state.

The government is hoping to show it has clawed back support with promises of reform and leadership changes after losing five states and a third of parliamentary seats in the March 2008 general elections.
For the opposition alliance, it is a chance to show its support is holding up and that it is working effectively, despite government claims that the partnership of three very different parties is already cracking up.
The by-election is the first major test for Najib, who is due to take over the top job next March. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was forced to agree to step aside in the fallout from the national elections.

The campaign for the seat of Kuala Terengganu in the state's capital -- previously held by a government deputy minister who died in November -- got under way Tuesday amid extremely tight security.
Tens of thousands of supporters from both sides faced off across metal barricades manned by police in full riot gear, among a 1,000-strong security contingent at a stadium where the candidates were announced.
At a rally late Monday, Najib urged his ruling party UMNO to abandon the rivalries that have damaged its performance in past polls, and close ranks to ensure victory in a vote pundits say could go either way.

"This is not a time to advance our own agenda," he said.
"We are weak. Our soul is weak. Let's pray to God to give us victory. Let's all pray to ask God to give us confidence to battle this election."
The government candidate, Wan Ahmad Farid, 46, is a controversial choice. The deputy home minister is from a wealthy family in Terengganu and has been criticised as having little grassroots experience.
The opposition is putting forward Mohamad Abdul Wahid from the Islamic party PAS. The 52-year-old is virtually unknown outside the state, but has an unblemished record and a history of wins in past state-level polls.

More than 10,000 opposition supporters gathered at the nomination centre, which was locked down by police who brought in water cannon trucks in case of clashes.
PAS members were joined by contingents from its alliance partners, the ethnic Chinese-dominated Democratic Action Party and the multiracial Keadilan, which represents Muslim Malays as well as ethnic Chinese and Indians.

"UMNO is full of cheats and abuses the people," said opposition supporter Ismail Abdullah, a 40-year-old street vendor. "PAS champions Islam, it is against cruelty and corruption."
The opposition is highlighting grievances against big-ticket projects in Terengganu, including the Monsoon Cup international yachting event, which they say have brought no benefits to local people.
But others said that only UMNO, which has dominated Malaysian politics for half a century, can bring prosperity to Terengganu.
"PAS only champions the Islamic religion. We need to balance religion with development. Our children need employment, and now many are forced to migrate to other states for jobs," said 26-year-old Mohamad Azuari.

Ibrahim Suffian, a pollster from the Merdeka Centre research firm, said the winning margin was likely to be just one or two percent, and that the small ethnic Chinese community in the state could swing the result.
Recent inflammatory comments from UMNO figures, including a proposal to shut down Chinese and Indian vernacular schools in Malaysia, would not help their chances, he said.
"If UMNO loses it will put Najib under tremendous pressure and he will be hard fought to explain the results to the party," he said.

DAP: Anwar, disiplinkan orang PKR

Ref: Malaysiakini

No land allotment for Gurdwara in Bayan Baru Penang

Panthic Weekly News Bureau

PENANG, Malaysia (KP)—The Bayan Baru Sikh community's dream of having its own Gurdwara has been shattered as the Penang Development Corporation announced that it does not have any land to spare for the Sikh Committee. A plea was submitted with the Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi early last year to seek allotment of land in the Bayan Baru non-Islamic enclave for the Sikh Community.

Earlier, land was allotted to different communities, including the Christians, Hindus and Buddhists who have already constructed their places of worship; however other communities, including the Sikhs in Bayan Baru, have to share the common carpark with followers of other religious faiths.

Manjit Singh, an official of Bayan Baru Gurdwara Association, alleged that the Sikh Community has grown rapidly and greatly needed its own place of worship. He claimed that earlier, a 0.4 ha piece of land had been allotted to the Sikh Community but local Sikhs were never able to construct a Gurdwara building there. He asked the Prime Minister to re-allot the land bank to the Sikh Community.

Datuk Rosli Jafar of the Penang Development Corporation alleged that no such land was allotted for construction of a Gurdwara. He said that he respects the wishes of the Sikh Community but the question of returning the land to the Sikh Community was not feasible as the corporation does not have any spare land left for allotment purposes.

Mr. Jafar did say that he was open for a dialogue if the Sikh Community was keen at developing its own Gurdwara, however he suggested the use of the common carpark. Local Sikhs are expected to meet soon to discuss the possibility of raising a dialog with the Penang

Angry protests over Gaza offensive

People across several continents have staged rallies to protest against Israel's ongoing bombardment of Gaza.

Thousands of Palestinians demonstrated in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Friday, after calls by Hamas for a "day of wrath".

"We will sacrifice our soul and our blood for Gaza," chanted the demonstrators, shouting pro-Hamas slogans and calling on fighters to "hit Tel-Aviv".

In Jerusalem, protesters clashed with police after Friday prayers.

With a view to curb protests, Israel sealed off the West Bank for the day as well as key parts of Jerusalem. Men aged under 50 years were prohibited from entering the Al-Aqsa mosque.
In the Jordanian capital Amman, riot police fired teargas to push back hundreds of protesters marching towards the Israeli embassy. Several protesters were beaten and arrested by police, the news agency Reuters said.

More than 10,000 people marched through Indonesia's capital carrying banners and Palestinian flags. The demonstrators gathered in the city centre to pray for the safety of Palestinians before marching to the US embassy, which was guarded by hundreds of police.

Protests were also held in other Indonesian cities after Friday prayers.

Extensive outrage

Demonstrations were held in Kabul and other cities in Aghanistan, where people expressed their disappointment with Arab leaders for their inability to take action towards Israel.
In Indian-administered Kashmir, hundreds burnt Israeli flags and chanted anti-Israel and anti-US slogans. They marched through the streets of the provincial capital Srinagar, carrying pro-Palestinian banners and portraits of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah.

"Look how they are killing Muslims and no one seems to be bothered," said Akbar Ali, one of the protesters.

People shouted anti-Israel slogans during a rally near the Israel embassy in Moscow [EPA]
In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood called for nationwide mass protests. Hundreds of riot police were deployed around key mosques in Cairo in anticipation of the protests. Egyptian police also detained 40 members of the Muslim Brotherhood, security officials said.

Thousands of protestors were out in Istanbul to support the Palestinians and show their outrage at Israel.

In Australia, more than 4,000 people gathered in the Parry Park in Sydney. Five local mosques had closed, asking worshippers to attend the vigil instead of the traditional Friday prayers.
Ibrahim Abu Mohammad, a local imam, led the service, urging Israel to recognise a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and agree to a ceasefire.

"Israel is committing an act of terrorism. It's the duty of all the free people in the world to stand against it and stop this evil," he said.

Hundreds took to the streets of the Bangladesh capital Dhaka after the Friday prayers and in the Philippines, dozens of demonstrators gathered in Manila, accusing Israel of war crimes.
In the Pakistani capital Islamabad, demonstrators called on the Arab and Muslim world to stop what they called the massacre committed against the population of Gaza.

Dear fellow Malaysians
For over 30 years, Aliran has been a beacon for Malaysian society in many important ways. Aliran provides a rallying point for citizens and civic organisations concerned with freedom, justice and democracy. Aliran defends civil liberties and human rights, and promotes inter-ethnic and inter-religious respect. More than that, Aliran advances the causes of marginalised communities, disadvantaged groups and persecuted individuals who are too often bereft of any opportunity to speak for themselves.

To carry out these tasks, Aliran depends on limited financial resources derived from Aliran Monthly subscriptions and sales as well as donations made by our members, subscribers and other well-wishers. Our writers, members and other supporters receive no payment for their tireless services.

For our operational expenses, we receive no funding whatsoever from any government or opposition political party, corporation or foreign source. We intend to keep things that way to safeguard our autonomy.

The cost of producing Aliran Monthly, disseminating information and publications, networking with other civic organisations, and organising public talks and forums has risen considerably. In truth, we are incurring deficits every month.

Is It Racist to Talk About Race?

Is it racist to talk about race? Yes, it is. And for Muslims, not only are they racists, but also “fasiq” and “munafiq”. [See Raja Petra Kamaruddin's posting here]. As Muslims, they have to be fair and just and treat others equally. They cannot talk about themselves being Muslims, assert their identity or fight for their rights. As majority of Muslims in this country are Malays, they also cannot talk about themselves being Malays, assert their Malay identity or fight for Malay rights. If they do, not only are they racists, but also fasiq and munafiq. Perhaps, Benedict Anderson has to come up with a whole new book on this new form of religio-nationalism.

Going by this logic, then this country was built by the “fasiqun” and “munafiqun”. Our forefathers who talked about Malay interests, Chinese interests or Indian interests when they negotiated for independence back in 1957 were “fasiqun” and “munafiqun”. [Well, perhaps, non-Muslim Chinese and Indian leaders should not be capped under the same category of “fasiqun” and “munafiqun” I guess, unless there are equivalent concepts in Buddhism and Hinduism]. Not only that, the Malays who attended Malay College of Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) - an elite school specially built for the sons of Malay aristocrats and royalties - were also “fasiqun” and “munafiqun”. The list will go further down to include all Malays who received scholarships from the government, worked in the civil service or secured government contracts [Again, non-Malay/non-Muslim tycoons who received awards of multi-billion ringgit worth privatization projects should not be capped under the same category, unless there are equivalent concepts under their religions].Again, if there are equivalent concepts of “fasiqun” and “munafiqun” in Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Taoism and Sikhism - going by RPK's logic - the non-Muslim Chinese and Indians who attended Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools are also “fasiqun” and “munafiqun”. The same goes to non-Muslims who promote the rights and interests of their respective religious communities.

The Chinese educationists as well as the members of Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) will be shocked to find that they are actually in the same category as those people in ABIM and PAS. The same goes to supporters of UMNO, MCA, MIC, Gerakan, PPP and DAP. PKR supporters too, I believe, are not spared from this trap.Pheww … then we suddenly realize that almost everybody in this country is racist, fasiqun and munafiqun. So, let’s talk about race - and religion - anyway.I’m not trying to be sarcastic about this. My point is, it is not wrong to talk about race or to promote the interests of one’s ethnic (or religious) community as long as it remains within the confine of the law and is done with full respect and understanding of other communities’ concerns and needs. We also have to come to grasp with political realities of our Malaysian society. This society was built not so much on the sweat and blood of territorial fighters, but on the compromises achieved by different ethnic communities who believed that for them to share a home they called Malaya, they should - to certain extent - forego some of their “redemptive rights”.Let's have a short journey to history.

In the formative years of modern Malayan society, different ethnic communities who inhabited Malaya held different visions about their place in the new state that they would give their loyalty to. Achieving communal compromises was therefore not an easy task. The Malays believed that they were the original inhabitanst of this land and they should therefore have the final say in determining the terms of the communal compromises. In a memorandum sent to the Cheeseman Consultative Committee on the Constitutional Proposals in 1947, the Malay Association of Ulu Terengganu said:Malaya is a Malay country which has been acknowledged to belong to the Malays from time immemorial. Therefore, (the position of Malay language) is extremely important and must be given priority …. If the Malay language is not given preference, the Malay race may be regarded as not being in existence and it means that this country does not belong to the Malays … the religion of Islam should be included in the proposals otherwise Islam may be endangered by Christianity and other religionsThe Ceylon Federation of Malaya said:The Ceylonese community came in large numbers to assist the development of Malaya … They had made Malaya their permanent home … and …with traditional loyalty and conservatism have given their entire lives exclusively to the service of Their Highnesses and the British administrators, while other races ventured into vocations of great gains, namely, planting, mining, trading and industry.

As such, the federation argued, it would only be appropriate if the residential requirement for Malayan-born Ceylonese was relaxed, the interests of Ceylonese government servants and of those in other employment should not be jeopardized, and the Ceylonese community be represented in the Federal Legislative Council. In asking for generous citizenship requirements, the Indian Association of Terengganu claimed:Men’s memories are short and hence the tendency is to regard Indians as unwelcome intruders whose contribution to Malayan economy is nil and their only contribution is to the English language of the word “coolie” which has found a place in school text-books … the Malay community may be excused for short memories but the Raj cannot dispute the contributions of India and Indians to the extension of its influence in this part of the world from the founding of Singapore in the early part of the nineteenth century to the liberation of Malaya a few months ago.The Chinese also claimed that they too had contributed a lot to the country and therefore should be given more rights.

Two Chinese leaders, HS Lee (later Tun) and Leong Yew Koh (later Tun), who sat on the Cheeseman Consultative Committee argued that the Chinese and Malay population were about equal, and by reason of their early association with Malaya, a great number of Chinese had as good claim to be regarded as the sons of the soil as the Malays.

They also argued that as the Chinese had to pay about 70 percent of the total taxes in the country, they had borne a greater burden in the country’s economic development. Apart from that, they reminded that the Chinese had made a noble contribution toward the defence of Malaya and borne the brunt of the Japanese fury and terrorism during the Japanese occupation. This, they said, was the price for, as well as the symbol of, the Chinese community’s loyalty for the country. As such, the two Chinese leaders demanded that the number of Chinese representatives in the Federal Legislative Council should be about equal to the number of Malay representatives. All Malayan-born Chinese should also automatically acquire Federal citizenship.

Even a multi-communal coalition of Malay left associations, radical-nationalist political parties, Chinese-based associations and trade unions called PUTERA-AMCJA, apart from demanding a united Malaya inclusive of Singapore, self-government through a fully elected central legislature for the whole of Malaya and equal citizenship rights also talked about race and religion. They demanded that the Malay Sultans should assume the position of fully sovereign and constitutional rulers; matters pertaining to Islam and Malay custom should be under the sole control of the Malays; and special attention should be given to the advancement of the Malays. [The last three demands were proposed by PUTERA, a coalition of Malay left associations].

By the time Malaya gained independence in 1957, a formula of communal compromise was agreed upon by the leaders of the Alliance parties. The main thrust of this formula was the preservation of special position of the Malays and the safeguarding of legitimate interests of other ethnic communities. While moving the constitutional proposals for the independent Malaya in the Federal Legislative Council in July 1957, Tunku Abdul Rahman spoke about the communal formula which laid the basis for the Federal Constitution:A formula was agreed upon by which it was decided that in considering the rights of the various peoples in this country no attempt must be made to reduce such rights which they have enjoyed in the past. As a result you find written into this Constitution rights of the various peoples they have enjoyed in the past and new rights, in fact, accorded to new people whom it was the intention to win over into the fold of the Malayan Nation.

I refer to the Citizenship rights. It is a right which has given the Malays very grave concern and fear. Nevertheless because of their desire and anxiety to put Malaya on the pedestal as an Independent Nation, they are prepared to give that right to the new people. There was no smooth sailing for the formula though. A Chinese legislator remarked that the Constitution created two classes of citizens. He argued:The second class citizens may say that since we are only entitled to three-fourths of the special privileges, therefore, we in the like proportion will bear only the three-fourths of the responsibilities. I say that in time to come it will create discord and dissatisfaction … I think that all the Chinese and the non-Malays will agree that a greater share of the privileges must go to the Malays until they reach parity of wealth with the non-Malays … [but] if the provision is put in the permanent part of the Constitution it will tarnish the fair name of our country.

The world would say that in this country you have one law for one race, another law for another race.An Indian legislator joined the fray. Arguing that no majority groups in any country in the world sought protection under the country’s Constitution, he warned:This special position of the Malays has acted to the detriment of the Malays – not the non-Malays. The non-Malays have improved because they are not given a special position … if the Malays had had competition, keen competition, from the other communities, they will be as much forward economically as the other races.Defending the Malay special privileges, a Malay legislator, Encik Ghafar Baba (later Tun) said:It should be noted that even the proposals by the Alliance have not satisfied the entire Malay masses of the Federation.

There are sections among them who have claimed that as natives of this country they deserve things far greater than what had been decided by the Alliance, but to be fair to the other races the UMNO had to steer a middle course; … Sir, I am surprised to learn that some sections of the population are demanding for equal rights in addition to their demand for relaxation of the present citizenship law … to these people I would say that their action is nothing but merely directed to arouse the anger of the Malays … this (further) relaxation, if carried out, would reduce the Malays to a minority in their own country in a few years time.To this, Tan Siew Sin (later Tun) of MCA said:The Malays cannot be expected to give up what they already have in the same way that they do not expect the other communities to give up their existing rights. Far more important, however, is the indisputable fact that as a race the Malays are economically backward and well behind the other races in the field … It has also been asked why it has not been explicitly stated that this provision is only temporary. I would remind our critics that the Malays are a proud and sensitive race.

They are also an intelligent race, and I know that they appreciate the significance and implications of this provision far better than most people realize. I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that when the time comes, the Malays themselves will ask for its abolition, but this is a matter which we must obviously leave to them to decide.Lashing out at the critics of the communal compromise, V.T Sambathan (later Tun) of MIC said:We hear it spoken, Sir, of first class and second class citizenship. Is the first class citizen one who is badly provided with roads, has leaky roof over his head, cannot even get a doctor on a rainy-day even if his child is badly ill? Is that person, be he in the kampong or estate or new village, the first-class citizen or is it he who has a bungalow in the Federal Capital, one possibly in the Cameron Highlands and a couple more at a seaside resort who is the first class citizen, I ask … An unbalance exists and it exists for various reasons. It may be that colonial rule, with all its defects, its sins of omission, has rendered these things so.

Freedom with its new outlook and an economy based for the purpose of helping the people will certainly solve most of these problems.Looking back in retrospection, all that had been said by our forefathers some fifty years ago are still not far off from us now. We are still listening to the same arguments, the same concerns, the same polemics. Racial (and religious) interests, alongside with the more "expressive" issues of human rights and freedoms, will continue to be one of the main planks of political discourse in multiracial and multireligious Malaysia. We can't terminate those concerns, but with a bit of wisdom we can surely manage it well beyond expectation. May be it is time for us, the children of this blessed land, to once again embrace the spirit of tolerance, compromise and mutual respect, as was examplified by our forefathers, so that we can move forward with vigour and resilience as one united nation.
