Malaysia's Anwar refuses to admit defeat

Kuala Lumpur, Nov 30: Malaysia's opposition leader has refused to concede defeat months after missing a deadline to seize power but admitted his plan to sign up defecting lawmakers had been a "headache".

After March general elections that saw the opposition alliance gain stunning victories, Anwar Ibrahim said he would topple the government by September 16. But that deadline came and went and the promised mass defections from the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition never materialised. His momentum stalled in October when Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi agreed to stand down next March, defusing public anger at the government's handling of the economy and failure to introduce promised reforms.

But Anwar was defiant at the annual congress of his Keadilan party, urging his supporters to continue to campaign against the Barisan Nasional which has ruled Malaysia for half a century. "Despite September 16... I am still very confident that we will form the next government," he said to thunderous applause from a crowd of more than 10,000 late yesterday.

"When (will we take over)? Wait. Until then, shake the foundations," he said. "Take it from me, not as Anwar but a representative of the conscience of this party and struggle, we are with you heart and soul, we will fight, we will struggle, we will never surrender." Anwar, who needs to win the support of 30 government lawmakers to take control of the 222-seat parliament, said that although he had strong support, he had been blocked from challenging the administration.

Malaysia's Anwar still wants to unseat government

Published: November 29, 200

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim assured supporters Saturday that he was still determined to unseat the government, which foiled his bid to seize power more than two months ago.

Anwar had boasted he would be able to persuade dozens of ruling coalition lawmakers to join his opposition alliance by mid-September. After no defections occurred, Anwar accused the government of using legal roadblocks to prevent a peaceful power transfer.
In a speech at the annual congress of his People's Justice Party on Saturday, Anwar told more than 2,000 opposition members that the ruling National Front coalition "cannot block the will of the people."

Political observers say it remains unclear whether Anwar ever had sufficient support to oust Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's administration, which rejected Anwar's demands in September to discuss a voluntary power transfer or to call a special Parliament session to hold a vote on confidence in Abdullah's leadership.

Anwar's three-party opposition alliance won an unprecedented 82 seats in the 222-member Parliament in March elections, gaining ground as the National Front's popularity plummeted amid racial disputes, a weak economy and corruption accusations.

Anwar reiterated his pledge to implement fair economic and social policies if the opposition takes power, but he did not set any new deadline. Malaysia's next general elections are scheduled to be held in 2013.

"We promised change ... but the change has not yet been achieved," the former deputy prime minister said. "Our future is bright."
Anwar's comments came amid expectations of a small electoral battle. Deputy Education Minister Razali Ismail collapsed and died while playing badminton late Friday, and a by-election will need to be held for his parliamentary seat.

PRESS STATEMENT : Fatwa On Yoga Is Insensitive

The Malaysia Hindu Sangam respects the right of the National Fatwa Council to give guidance for persons professing Islam on the tenets and practices of Islam.
However, in doing so, they must respect the sensitivities and feelings of the other religions in Malaysia. Many Hindus have been deeply disturbed by the Fatwa Council’s announcement.
Yoga has been practiced for more than 5,000 years. It is a unique system that benefits both the mind and the body. It has been accepted by medical science as most beneficial. To call this ancient practice “haram” and saying that it can “corrupt” a person is very hurtful and demeaning.
It is regretted that the National Fatwa Council did not consult with the Malaysia Hindu Sangam first so that the religious and non religious aspects of “Yoga” could have been explained to them.
Although the fatwa does not directly prohibit Hindus from practicing yoga, Malaysians do not live in isolation from each other.
Many Hindus and non Hindus practice yoga together in a non religious manner, and this fatwa will have a tendency to drive a wedge between ourselves.
It is regretted that this fatwa prohibiting yoga shows a tendency towards a lack of tolerance and understanding which can cause communities to distance themselves from one another.

PEMUDA PKR TAK PUAS HATI

Malaysia’s Economic Growth Slows on Weaker Exports (Update1)

Malaysia’s Economic Growth Slows on Weaker Exports (Update1)

By Stephanie Phang

Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Malaysia’s economy expanded at the slowest pace in three years as the global recession hurt manufacturing and cooled exports.

Southeast Asia’s third-largest economy grew 4.7 percent in the quarter ended Sept. 30 from a year earlier, down from a revised 6.7 percent gain in the previous three months, the central bank said in Kuala Lumpur today. Economists were expecting a 4.5 percent increase.

Growth eased “amid the sharp deterioration in the global economic and international financial environment,” Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz said in Kuala Lumpur today. “While this more challenging period is expected to see a moderation in growth, the economy will continue to expand.”

Malaysia this month cut interest rates for the first time since 2003 and announced a 7 billion ringgit ($1.9 billion) spending plan to bolster domestic demand as recessions in the U.S., Japan and Europe hurt exports of made-in-Asia Intel Corp. chips and other goods. Easing inflation amid slowing growth may lead to further cuts in borrowing costs, economists say.

“Exports are losing traction with global demand for electronics slowing and falling commodity prices,” said Lee Heng Guie, chief economist at CIMB Investment Bank Bhd. in Kuala Lumpur. “What would keep the economy up will depend on consumer spending and government pump priming. You will have more substantial monetary easing on all fronts.”

Global Recession

The pace of growth in Asian economies will probably ease “substantially” as the global slowdown erodes demand for their exports and banks restrain lending amid the credit crunch, the International Monetary Fund said Nov. 24. The slump has prompted policy makers from China to the U.S. to cut interest rates and announce spending packages to sustain growth.

Bank Negara cut its overnight policy rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 3.25 percent on Nov. 24 and lowered the amount of money lenders need to set aside as reserves to support economic growth. The benchmark rate will probably fall to 2.75 percent by March, according to Aseambankers Malaysia Bhd., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and HSBC Holdings Plc.

Finance Minister Najib Razak announced the public spending program on Nov. 4 as he predicted economic expansion would slow to an eight-year low of 3.5 percent in 2009 amid the worst global financial crisis since the Great Depression.

Public Discontent

Najib, who is also deputy premier, is due to replace Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi next year as head of the ruling coalition, and needs to prevent the economic slowdown from fueling public discontent after the government suffered its worst election result in half a century this March.

“Slowing global growth and the flight to safety in financial markets hurt the Malaysian economy,” said Nikhilesh Bhattacharyya, an economist at Moody’s Economy.com in Sydney. “Recessions in Japan, the EU and the U.S. are wounding the manufacturing sector, which employs around 18 percent of the workforce.”

Sales by U.S. electronics makers in Malaysia will fall this year and next and the manufacturers will probably have to cut jobs in 2009, Wong Siew Hai, chairman of the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce’s 17-member electronics industry group said this week.

Eng Teknologi Holdings Bhd., the Malaysian maker of hard- disk drives whose clients include Western Digital Corp., said this week orders in the first half of 2009 may fall as much as 20 percent. Genting Bhd., Asia’s largest listed casino operator, slipped into losses last quarter and said the rest of the year will be “challenging” amid the global economic slowdown.

“This is not the time to talk about expansion,” said Poh Kim Seng, chief executive officer of MS Elevators Sdn., which makes lifts for export to more than 20 countries. “We’re talking today about consolidation.”

Malaysia’s manufacturing industry grew 1.8 percent in the third quarter, slowing from a 5.6 percent gain in the previous three months. Exports of goods and services increased 5.1 percent, from 9.7 percent in the second quarter.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 - Dr Munawar Anees declared today that he will pursue the overturning of his sodomy conviction to the bitter end.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 - Dr Munawar Anees declared today that he will pursue the overturning of his sodomy conviction to the bitter end.

Munawar was convicted of sodomy a decade ago.

Munawar, who was a speechwriter for de facto PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when he was Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, was detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) and then convicted of sodomy in 1998.

He told reporters at the PKR headquarters here that his legal team are now in the process of filing an application in the Court of Appeals to set aside its own ruling from Oct 30, 2007 dismissing his appeal for his conviction to be reviewed in the High Court.
“I am advised to apply to the Court of Appeals to set right the injustice perpetrated against me for over a decade,” he said.

On Oct 30 this year, the Federal Court dismissed his appeal against his earlier sodomy conviction. In his first case after his controversial appointment as head of the Malaysian judiciary, Chief Justice Tan Sri Zaki Azmi, who presided over a three-judge panel, offered no clarification as to the grounds for the dismissal.

Munawar said, however, that he will not stop until he has been exonerated of what he claims to be a fabricated charge.

“You can say it is an emotional statement, but my will to my children stipulates that if this issue is not resolved after I am gone, they will continue to fight for justice.”

A decade ago, Munawar was convicted, based on a signed confession, of sodomy with Anwar.
However, in a statutory declaration issued 10 years ago, Munawar claimed that he had been forced to confess following brutal torture while he was in detention.

In the statutory declaration, he claimed that Special Branch officers had abused him mentally and physically.

Today, he described the detention as having left him with a “tormented memory” of being “blindfolded, stripped naked, driven in an animal cage, shaven bald, drugged, threatened and treated as a psychiatric patient with symptoms of Stockholm Syndrome.”
He added that he had been fed “rancid rice and chicken along with 12 medicines a day” for 126 days, handcuffed round the clock to his hospital bed.

Munawar also said he believed that the current sodomy charges against Anwar were trumped up but that, despite this, he would be cleared of his own decade-old conviction.
He said that as Anwar was cleared of those earlier charges, then others also implicated should now be exonerated as well.

He added that despite all that has happened, he does not have a negative view of the Malaysian judiciary.

“It is a statement of fact that I have been waiting for 10 years for my day in court. There is no value judgment to it.

“This is not horse racing,” he quipped when asked on his chances of finding justice.
“It is a question of rule of law and applying it equally to everyone, not about faith in people,” he replied when asked whether he had faith in the judiciary under Zaki.

ANWAR TIDAK AKAN TENTUKAN LAGI TARIKH AMBIL ALIH KUASA

Terjemahan WRLR

JAGA DISIPLIN, IMEJ PARTI NASIHAT SETIAUSAHA AGUNG

Sebelum Pakatan Rakyat dihinggapi penyakit sang penguasa

Ahmad Lutfi Othman

Pilihan raya 2004 mengubah keadaan. Umno nampak pulih sepenuhnya. PAS Kelantan pun hampir tersungkur. Fenomena Abdullah Ahmad Badawi memeranjatkan.

Abdullah terpaksa akur, beliau mesti keluar secepat mungkin.

Ciri-ciri "kerajaan menanti" wajar dipenuhi segera.

Malaysia backs down from yoga ban amid backlash

ReutersPublished: Wednesday, November 26, 2008

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's prime minister said Wednesday Muslims should still take up yoga, reversing an outright ban that has drawn widespread protests amid concerns over growing Islamic fundamentalism in the multiracial nation. Malaysia's National Fatwa Council, comprising Islamic scholars, told Muslims at the weekend to avoid yoga because it uses Hindu prayers that could erode Muslims' faith.

But the decision drew a sharp rebuke from many Muslims and even Malaysia's sultans, or hereditary rulers, who said that they should be consulted on any matters involving Islam.
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi moved to contain the damage, telling the national news agency Bernama that Muslims could carry on doing yoga but minus the chanting.

A woman practices yoga at a centre in Kuala Lumpur

"I wish to state that a physical regime with no elements of worship can continue, meaning, it is not banned. I believe that Muslims are not easily swayed into polytheism," he said.
Just before Abdullah spoke, the eldest son of the ruler of the central Negeri Sembilan state took the government to task over the yoya ruling.

"Islam is a progressive religion and the ulama (scholars) should be confident of the followers' faith rather than micro-managing their way of life," Tunku Naquiyuddin told a luncheon.
"If I go to a church or a Buddhist temple, is there any fear of me converting? ... Where do we draw the line?" the online version of the Star newspaper quoted him as saying.
The yoga fatwa ruling came hot on the heels of another edict against young Muslim women wearing trousers.

Fatwas or religious edicts are not legally binding, but they are highly influential in Malaysia, where Malay-Muslims form just over half of the country's 27 million people.
The fatwa council has said that by wearing trousers, girls risked becoming sexually active "tomboys." Gay sex is outlawed in Malaysia.

Malaysia's sizeable minorities include ethnic Chinese and Indians who practice either Christianity, Buddhism or Hinduism.

Babi pun tak makan bangkai babi, tetapi kamu ibarat memakan daging mayat saudara kamu sendiri.

Rasanya kes TKM1 Pulau Pinang ni mainan UMNO Pulau Pinang.Ahli Parti tak buat rasanya.
FIKIR-FIKIRKAN 51 TAHUN NAK TAWAN 6 NEGERI AKAN HILANG SEKEJAP SAHAJA........ JADI ORANG YANG BIJAK DAN CERDIK

THE opposition has called on the government to have bipartisan discussions on the country's economy.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the finance minister should take the initiative to do this in Parliament or in a roundtable discussion.
"We are here to engage and assist," he said at the Parliament lobby yesterday after his motion to discuss the economy was rejected by Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Ronald Kiandee.
He had called for an adjournment of the House to discuss the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development World Investment Report 2008 on the outflow of foreign direct investment of RM38 billion. The inflow was RM29 billion last year, resulting in a negative FDI of RM9 billion.

He said the outflow had been happening since 2005 and if this continued, it could cause a contraction in the economy, a decline in gross domestic products and unemployment.
He asked why was there an increase of investments in most Asean member countries except Malaysia.
